Lady Jackets win 2 at Brewer Tournament

FORT WORTH — The Cleburne Lady Jackets opened play Thursday in the Brewer Tournament with a pair of blowout wins.

In their tournament opener, Cleburne beat Grand Prairie, 11-4, and in the Lady Jackets’ second game on Thursday, they recorded a 16-2 win over Graham in five innings.

“We’ve just been going to work, trying to win every half inning and every inning,” Cleburne Coach Kala Winn said. “We have focused on the task at hand and put forth the effort to come out on top each inning, knowing that the end result will come.

“I am proud of these girls and what they have accomplished so far, but we are definitely not satisfied and understand that staying humble and staying hungry is a must to reach our ultimate goal this season.”

Against Grand Prairie, Mackenzie Kirkpatrick got the win in the circle as she struck out five and allowed only four hits.

Shelbi Ritchey went 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, Savannah Milne was 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored, and Cassidy Wright was 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs, a walk and a run scored to lead the Lady Jackets at the plate.

In their contest against Graham, Cleburne ended the game in the fifth inning by invoking a mercy rule when the Lady Jackets plated seven runs in the frame.

Cleburne played small ball and took advantage of Graham’s inconsistent pitching as the Lady Jackets scored 16 runs on only eight hits.

Jadyn Luna received the pitching win for the Lady Jackets, and Coach Kala Winn said the victory was a complete team effort.

With the two wins, Cleburne improved to 4-0 on the season.
