Lady Jackets dispose of Joshua, 70-46

JOSHUA — The Cleburne Lady Jackets took care of business at rival Joshua on Friday night, beating the Lady Owls, 70-46, to stay atop the District 8-4A standings.

Cleburne held a 17-7 lead after the first quarter and used a 17-5 advantage in the third quarter to coast to a victory.

Lady Jacket Coach Jamie Calahan said the win was a complete team effort as five Lady Jackets scored at least nine points.

“The girls played well and it was a good team effort,” Calahan said. “I am very proud of the win. We got after it and played hard.”

Bria McCullough led the way for Cleburne with 13 points. Jasline Chandler and Courtney Jeffcoat each scored 11 points.

Coming off the bench, Alli Suitt scored 10 points and Kelsi Chavez added nine points.

Peyton Klund led Joshua with 12 points.

The Lady Jackets sit at 10-1 in district play, but still maintain only a one-game lead over Burleson Centennial for first place after the Lady Spartans defeated Waco University, 59-38, on Friday.

Cleburne, which clinched a playoff berth following Tuesday’s district-wide results, faces a crucial three-game stretch to end the season in hopes of capturing the district title. The first step in that three-game stretch is Tuesday against Burleson, followed by matchups with Burleson Centennial and Crowley to end the regular season.

“Tuesday night is big,” Calahan said. “We’re taking it one game a time. We got Burleson at their place. They’re a big rival. It’s a big game for us and it’s a big game for them. We’re not looking ahead. We’re looking at it one at a time. And Burleson’s next.”

Cleburne and Burleson are set for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff Tuesday from Burleson High School.
