Lady Jackets battle for 56-54 win at University

WACO — Friday night’s contest at Waco University for the Lady Jackets didn’t come close to resembling Cleburne’s 72-31 win over the Lady Trojans earlier this season in the least bit. But Cleburne still came home with the hard-fought win, 56-54.

Cleburne Coach Jamie Calahan said prior to the game that he expected a tough contest from a feisty University team, and after the game, he was pleased to simply get the road win despite his Lady Jackets not playing their best game.

“[University] did a good job,” Calahan said. “They’re feisty. They have nothing to lose and they played their heart out. We didn’t shoot the ball very well, and University played hard and got after it and started making shots. We shot about 30 percent from the field and 40 percent from the free-throw line. We played hard and got after it, but we just couldn’t make shots.

“It’s a good road win. It’s what we got to have. That’s all we can keep doing is battling. If you win by two or win by 30, you still get the W.”

It was a battle from the beginning for the Lady Jackets. Cleburne held an 11-10 lead after the first quarter and University managed to take a 23-22 lead at halftime. The Lady Jackets fought back to reclaim the lead in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Trojans, 17-12, in the frame.

“If you look at University’s scores, they’ve played a lot of close games,” Calahan said. “They’re going to beat somebody, and it was almost us. I can tell you — they’re going to knock somebody off.”

The Lady Jackets were led by Bria McCullough and Jasline Chandler. McCullough scored 16 points while Jasline Chandler added 11 points and 14 rebounds. It was Chandler’s second consecutive game with a double-digit rebound total. Jazlin Jones added nine points and Courtney Jeffcoat scored eight to go along with five steals.

Cleburne and University combined for 52 fouls in the game.

The win kept Cleburne (19-6) in first place in District 8-4A at 8-1, one game ahead of Burleson Centennial.

The Lady Jackets host Waco High at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“It’s going to be a big game Tuesday night,” Calahan said. “They’re fighting for a playoff spot. I told the girls from the get-go, we’re going to get everybody’s best game. Everybody’s going to play their best game against us. We just have to keep working and keep building.”
