In three out of four quarters of Joshua’s game against Burleson on Tuesday night, the Lady Owls outscored the Lady Elks 27-23. But the second quarter was more than enough to send Joshua to their sixth loss in District 8-4A play as Burleson outscored the Lady Owls 22-2 in those eight minutes.
And not playing for all four quarters is what has kept Joshua from a more successful season, Coach Danny Gillham said.
“We’re not putting together a complete game,” he said. “We’ll play three good quarters or we’ll play three-and-a-half good quarters, but it seems like we have a stretch in most games where we stop doing the things we need to do to make us successful. In a district like ours, if you make mistakes, you’re going to pay for it.
“We had an awful second quarter. We stopped doing the things that we talked about in our gameplan that were going to make us successful. The other three quarters we executed our gameplan. ... You’ve got to be able to take away their strengths and attack their weaknesses.
Before the 45-27 loss to Burleson on Friday, Joshua fell to Waco, 54-38. The Lady Owls hung tough with state-ranked Waco in the first half, as Joshua faced a 32-27 halftime deficit. But Joshua was outscored by 11 points in the second half.
Kalie Schuman led Joshua with 15 points in the loss to Waco while Hailey Calfee added nine.
The Lady Owls have struggled putting together a whole 32 minutes of play and that has resulted in a 2-6 start in district play.
But despite that 2-6 record, Gillham said they are still fighting for a postseason berth.
“Every game is an opportunity to get better,” Gillham said. “We just want to be as successful as we can be. I know it’s a long shot, but we’re not [eliminated] yet, so until that point, I’m not going to say anything but we’re striving for the playoffs.”
The Lady Owls travel to Crowley on Friday in their first attempt to stay alive in the hunt for a playoff berth.
“Last time we played them, we lost by seven points,” Gillham said.
“We just didn’t make enough shots in the fourth quarter. If we play like we’re capable, I anticipate another close game that will come down to the end.”
Tipoff for Joshua’s game in Crowley is 6:30 p.m. Friday.
