EVERMAN —
The Cleburne Lady Jackets continue to impress as they defeated Everman, 47-39, on Tuesday night in Everman.
Cleburne now sits at 7-1 in District 8-4A play, a complete 180 from where they sat a year ago in the district standings.
“That’s one thing I tell them is that we’re in uncharted territory now,” Cleburne Coach Jamie Calahan said. “At this time last year, we were 0-8 in the district. We’re doing things that haven’t been done here in a while and we’re learning as we go. I’m very proud of the girls. As long as we defend and rebound, we’ll give ourselves a chance in every game.”
The Lady Jackets held a 16-9 edge after the first quarter, but Everman closed the gap to only two points at halftime, 25-23. After Cleburne recorded a 61-21 over Everman in the district opener on Dec. 11, the Lady Bulldogs came prepared for the upset, but the Lady Jackets’ stout defense helped Cleburne prevail for the fifth district game in a row.
“That’s a tough place to play,” Calahan said. “It’s another district road win for us. Winning district road games is not the easiest thing in the world. We just fought hard and stayed in it. We battled. We didn’t shoot the ball exceptionally well, but our defense kept us in it.
“You’re going to take their best shot at home. We beat them by 40 and played exceptionally well here and they came back at us. They had nothing to lose. Now we’re winning and turning the corner, but with that comes pressure. We’ve got to just hold up to the pressure and keep battling. A 40-point win, a 5-point win, a 12-point win, they’re all wins. We’re not trying to win by any margins. We’re just trying to win ball games.”
Courtney Jeffcoat led the Lady Jackets with 12 points. Bria McCullough added 10 points as nine players scored for Cleburne. McCullough led Cleburne with six rebounds to go with three steals.
Jasline Chandler and Hillary King each scored seven points. Jeffcoat and Chandler also had three steals each.
“We’ve had people step up every game,” Calahan said. “We have different people do different things. That’s the trait of a good team.”
Cleburne hosts Waco University at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
