Lady Jackets fall by 1 point vs No. 1 Class 3A team in the state

Cleburne goes 1-1 in first day of Ennis Tournament

ENNIS — The Cleburne Lady Jackets went 1-1 on the first day of the Ennis Tournament with a blowout win over W.T. White and a close loss to La Vega.

In Cleburne’s first game, the Lady Jackets had little trouble with W.T. White, as they rolled to a 76-12 win. In the Lady Jackets’ second game, they fell to the No. 1-ranked Class 3A team in the state, Waco La Vega, by one point, 43-42.

Against W.T. White, the Lady Jackets jumped out to a 25-5 lead after the first quarter and cruised to the win.

All 11 players for Cleburne scored, led by Jasline Chandler’s 13 points, Avery Hough’s 10 points, Taya Berry’s 10 points and Bri Guzman’s nine points. Whitney Morgan and Akarian Morgan each added eight points.

“Everyone played really well in that game,” Cleburne Coach Jamie Calahan said.

In Cleburne’s second game, the Lady Jackets fell behind in the second quarter when La Vega outscored Cleburne, 13-3, to build a 26-15 halftime lead. Cleburne managed to out-score La Vega, 27-17, including a 17-12 edge in the fourth, but the Lady Jackets came up just short.

“It was a good ball game and it was back and forth the whole fourth quarter,” Calahan said. “They have two really good players. We just fought hard, gave ourselves a chance, took the lead, but it just wasn’t mean to be. It was tit for tat in the fourth quarter, just back and forth. We made some good plays, they made some good plays.

“We faced a 6-foot, 4-inch girl and we did a really good job today on her. We held their two star players below their averages.”

Morgan led the Lady Jackets with 17 points while Bria McCullough added 14 points.

“We were right there and had a chance to win,” Calahan said. “We gave them some problems. They’ve been beating everybody by 20 points. So for us, we had that chance, and I’m very proud of the girls.”

The games scheduled to be played Friday and Saturday in the Ennis Tournament were tentatively canceled as of Thursday.

If the cancellation holds, the Lady Jackets (8-3) will open District 8-4A play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Everman.

Cleburne will then host Waco University at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 for the Lady Jackets’ first district home game of the season.
