Cleburne tennis claims four top-3 finishes at district tourney

Cleburne's Walters, Marquez take mixed doubles title

BURLESON — The District 8-4A tennis tournament wrapped up play Tuesday at the Burleson High School tennis complex, and the Cleburne Yellow Jackets came away with one district title, one runner-up and a pair of third-place finishes.

Cleburne’s Joey Walters and Jeanette Marquez captured first place in mixed doubles as they defeated Crowley’s Kyle Marner and Rachel Lowe, 6-3, 6-4.

It was the second consecutive year for both Walters and Marquez to advance to regionals, although it’s their first year as partners.

Last year, Walters and Brooke Mathis advanced in mixed doubles while Marquez and Dana Siler got second place at the district meet in girls doubles. Two years ago, Walters and his brother, Jimmy, advanced to regionals in boys doubles.

“They both have good regional experience, so hopefully they’ll get a good draw and be able to do something,” Cleburne Coach Stacey Foster said.

After a rough day 1, Cleburne’s Daisa Whitton and Logan Chapin defeated Burleson Centennial’s Carson Patterson and McKinsey Owen, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, for third place.

“They’ve been very consistent this spring,” Foster said. “They’ve been in the finals almost every tournament we’ve played in, and I really thought they had a good chance of beating Crowley’s No. 1 team, but they were just not on at all [Monday]. So I was really proud to see them come back and beat a team that they lost to a couple of weeks ago. I was proud of them for getting it all together to get third because they were disappointed in their play [Monday].”

In girls doubles, Burleson Centennial’s Hannah Gonzalez and Paige Murphy beat Burleson Centennial’s Araly Gutierrez and Georgia Brown, 6-3, 6-4, for first place.

Brown and Gutierrez then had to play Cleburne’s Siler and Kylie Conner in a playback match, where Siler and Conner came out victorious, 7-5, 6-0, for second place. Siler and Conner previously beat Crowley, 6-1, 6-1, in the third place match but got the opportunity to try for second place via a playback.

In boys doubles, Waco’s Marshall Tekell and Richard Johnson beat Burleson’s Adam White and Daniel Collinsworth, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, for first place. Crowley’s Jaron Curry and Aaron Johnson beat Centennial, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, for third place.

In girls singles, Burleson’s Hayley Gregory won her third consecutive district title as she defeated Crowley’s Annika Burkhardt, 6-2, 6-1. Gregory won first place in girls singles last year, also, and, as a sophomore, won district in girls doubles.

Cleburne’s Sierra Newton earned a third-place finish after she defeated Everman, 7-6, 6-2, in the third place game, but then lost to Burkhardt, 6-2, 6-2, in a playback match for second place.

In boys singles, Everman’s Angel Palacios beat Burleson Centennial’s Zach Carter, 6-0, 6-0, for the title while Crowley’s Elijah Albano beat Cleburne’s Ryan Pardo in the third-place match.

The top two finishers in each event advance to regionals with the third-place finisher going as an alternate.

The Class 4A Region I tennis tournament is Monday and Tuesday in Abilene.
