Lady Jackets top Waco, 54-45

CLEBURNE — It was the Jasline Chandler and Jazlin Jones show for Cleburne on Tuesday night as the duo combined for 35 points and 15 rebounds to help propel the Lady Jackets to a 54-45 win over Waco High at Jeff D. Cody Gymnasium.

The win was Cleburne’s 20th of the season and the Lady Jackets maintained their hold of first place in District 8-4A with a record of 9-1.

“The girls got after it and played hard,” Cleburne Coach Jamie Calahan said. “I’m super proud of this group — every one of them. They come to practice and work hard and get after it every day. My hat’s off to the girls. They’ve done a great job this year. That’s our 20th win this year, which is a big-time feat — 20 wins in a season. And we still have four games left. So I’m just very proud of them.”

After falling to Cleburne, 67-45, on Dec. 17, Waco High (5-5 in District 8-4A) showed up determined for payback, as the Lady Lions controlled much of the first half. Waco, which has primarily played man-to-man defense all season, started the game in zone defense, and it took a while for the Lady Jackets to find the most efficient way to attack the Lady Lions’ defense.

“It wasn’t my best coaching effort, but [the girls] overcame it,” Calahan said. “Waco High did a few things that we weren’t really prepared for. They threw in a zone, which they didn’t run any zone when we played them before, so we had to adjust to that. We threw in a little bit of a different defense for ourselves that we haven’t run much. The girls did a good job. They did a good job of fighting.

“We’ve played against some zone this season, but in all the film we have on them, they don’t run much zone. They run a lot of man. We always prepare for zones, but I really thought they were going to run man, and they came out in zone and kind of slowed us down a little bit. But we responded well and got after it, and I’m proud of the girls.”

Waco held a 12-10 lead after the first quarter. Cleburne started the game 0-for-4 with four turnovers before Jones hit a pair of free throws with 4:18 left in the opening quarter for the Lady Jackets’ first points.

Waco continued to hold onto the lead until Cleburne tied it at 16 with 4:18 left in the second quarter. The Lady Jackets then took the lead for good on a Courtney Jeffcoat 3 to put Cleburne up 19-16.

Cleburne led 23-19 at the half. The Lady Jackets took control of the game by opening the third quarter on a 12-0 run in the first three minutes to go up 35-19. From that point on, it was a matter of keeping the lead and running some clock.

Cleburne’s largest lead of 17 points came early in the fourth quarter when the Lady Jackets went up 46-29.

Jones led the Lady Jackets with 21 points and eight rebounds to go along with three assists, a steal and a blocked shot. Chandler added 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting, seven rebounds and three steals.

“They played well,” Calahan said. “They all did a good job.”

Bria McCullough scored 10 points to go along with three rebounds and two steals while Jeffcoat scored seven points and dished out five assists. Avery Hough added five rebounds off the bench.

Despite shooting 3-of-16 from 3, the Lady Jackets connected on 48 percent of their shots from the field, including 19-of-30 from inside the arc. Waco shot 32 percent from the floor, including 2-of-17 from 3.

Cleburne plays at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Joshua.
