CLEBURNE —
The Everman Bulldogs out-shot and out-rebounded the Cleburne Yellow Jackets in a 72-45 win on Tuesday night at Jeff D. Cody Gymnasium.
Cleburne was held to only 16-of-52 for 30 percent shooting while the Bulldogs shot 44 percent from the floor, including 6-of-16 from beyond the arc.
Everman also proved too much in the rebounding differential as the Bulldogs pulled in 17 offensive rebounds, compared to only 25 total rebounds (nine offensive) for the Jackets.
To make matters worse for the Cleburne, Everman forced the Jackets into 23 turnovers with their full-court press defense. Cleburne struggled at times getting the ball up court and into their offense.
Two of the three areas (rebounding and turnovers) have been the Achilles’ Heel for the Jackets all season long, and they are two keys Cleburne Coach Jimmy Littleton talks about before and after each game. But the Jackets struggled mightily in both areas, and, combined with a poor shooting performance, Cleburne lost its third game in a row.
The Jackets got off to a hot start as they opened the game on a 9-2 run. But the Bulldogs responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take a 12-9 lead. The Jackets tied it at 12 before Everman closed the final two minutes of the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The 7-0 Bulldog run at the end of the first turned into a 15-2 run over the course of the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter as Everman built a 27-14 lead that proved insurmountable for the young Jackets. Everman held a 34-19 lead at halftime and a 52-29 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Bre Miller led the Jackets in scoring with 14 points as he made 4-of-6 from 3-point territory and he also had five rebounds. Al Baylor added 11 points and four rebounds.
Ryan Kirk scored five points and had five rebounds and Marc Murillo scored five points with six rebounds. Murillo made his first two field goals, but then missed his final nine attempts as the Bulldog defense was physical in the paint.
Carl Blake added four points and three rebounds off the bench.
Donald Thomas led the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points while Derrion Alexander added 14 points.
Cleburne (2-4 in District 8-4A) travels to Waco University on Friday.
