ALVARADO — The Alvarado Indians fell to the third-ranked Argyle Eagles 56-27 on Monday at Indian Gym in a nondistrict matchup.

Jerome Brown led the way for Alvarado with nine points in the losing effort.

After being plagued by turnovers in the first half and trailing 34-13 at the break, Alvarado head coach Kevin Starnes said his team made better use of its possessions in the second half.

“I thought we fought and yes the turnovers were reduced,” Starnes said. “They got some turnovers out of us in the first half, but they didn’t get the same turnovers in the second half. I thought we took care of the basketball and attacked a little better and got more open shots.”

In the final period, the Indians outscored the visiting Eagles 12-11 after beginning the period trailing 47-17.

Starnes said playing high-level competition helps the team see how it stacks up against what they could face in the playoffs.

“I felt like this was an opportunity for us to learn how good we can be,” Starnes said. “It really allows us to see our weaknesses. These last three games, all the teams we’ve played will make the playoffs.

“That’s where we want to be so we need to play those teams to see where we stack up. Every game we’ve gotten better and I’ve been very pleased with that.”

Broam Hart and Jonathan Holley both finished the night with four points.

Kevin Handy pitched in three and the trio of Eric Peteet, Colton Warden and Blake Hoover all netted two points.

Nelson Traylor finished with a point.
