Godley boys athletic director and head football coach Ronnie Stephens recently resigned after three years with the Wildcats.
“They’ve got some great kids and a good senior class moving up,” Stephens said. “They’re wanting to move in a new direction. I’ve enjoyed my time there.”
Godley superintendent Paul Smithson said the school hopes to have a replacement selected for the second half of the 2008-09 school year.
“We’re taking applications now,” Smithson said. “We’re planning on having a new coach in place early in the spring semester.
“We appreciate everything coach Stephens has done for the program. This was a hard decision to make.”
Stephens was the head football coach and boys athletic director for the Wildcats from 2006 until this past season. During that time, he amassed a 17-15 overall record with two trips to the postseason.
Both of those playoff runs ended with first-round losses.
In 2007, the Wildcats lost 15-9 to Henrietta and this season ended with a 35-14 loss to Troy in the bidistrict round.
Before taking over as head coach and athletic director, Stephens was the defensive coordinator for Godley in 2004 and 2005 and also the head powerlifting coach from 2004-06.
Stephens said he will return to working in sales for Carey’s Sporting Goods in Fort Worth sometime after the new year.
He worked previously with Carey’s from 1998-2000.
