Elks out of playoff hunt with loss to Jaguars

Burleson’s chances at the postseason ended Friday night at Elk Stadium after a 35-7 loss to Mansfield Summit and a 35-14 win by Weatherford over Granbury.

The Elks (5-5, 3-4) finished with the same District 4-5A record as Weatherford; however, by virtue of Burleson’s loss earlier in the season to the Kangaroos, Weatherford advances to the playoffs.

Summit (9-1, 7-0), which faces Midland Lee next week in the bi-district playoffs, jumped out to a 21-0 lead before Burleson could get on the board.

The Jaguars led 7-0 after completing an eight-play, 47-yard drive on a 9-yard run by quarterback Matt Hill.

The Jaguars’ second possession culminated in another touchdown when Hill connected with Adam Visosky on a 4-yard pass.

A 29-yard run by Hill on the previous play set up the score. Earlier in the drive, Hill connected on a 26-yard pass to Matt Brawley to move the Jaguars into Burleson territory at the 48.

Burleson stalled on its third consecutive possession, which allowed Summit to increase its lead with its third straight scoring drive.

Summit needed only seven plays to go 62 yards.

Running back Nelson Akinwande did most of the work, carrying the ball four times for 47 yards.

Running mate Yaw Mensah took the handoff at the Elk 8 before fumbling at the 3. A fight for the ball ensued and Summit’s Michael Branch eventually recovered the ball in the end zone for the touchdown.

Quinn Sharp’s third of five extra points on the night made it 21-0.

Burleson did manage to put together a scoring drive just before halftime to cut the deficit to 14.

Quarterback Will Grimes ran for 29 yards on the first play of the drive and then four plays later scored on a 39-yard run with 20 seconds left in the second quarter.

However, Summit increased the lead to 28-7 in the third quarter, taking the opening kickoff and driving 66 yards in eight plays.

Hill scored from 5 yards out on third and goal.

Summit’s Carlos Castaneda returned a Brad Schaefer punt 38 yards to the Elk 22 four plays later to set up the Jaguars for another score.

Hill hit Mensah in the end zone from five yards away to account for the last score of the game.

Defensively, Summit controlled the game, allowing only seven Elk first downs and 127 yards rushing on 34 attempts. Grimes finished the game 2-of-5 passing for 18 yards and led all Burleson rushers with 54 yards on five carries.

Brandon Young had 40 yards on 12 attempts and Jordan Freelen ran for 27 yards on 12 carries and had one catch for 14 yards.

Summit gained 205 yards on the ground on 43 carries and two quarterbacks — Hill and Richard Sanguinetti — combined to finish 9-of-9 passing for 105 yards.

Hill was 6-of-6 for 79 yards.

Akinwande led Summit with 105 yards rushing on 18 carries.

Seven different Jaguars caught passes, including Eric Waters with two for 31 yards and D’Aaron Williams with two for 17 yards.
