Four area teams advance to playoffs

The dust has settled and the 2009 football regular season is now behind us.

Left standing after the mayhem are four Johnson County squads that are postseason bound: Alvarado, Burleson, Godley and Grandview.

The Indians clinched a berth last week with a victory over Crandall, but Alvarado assured itself of a share of the 12-3A title with a 35-0 win over Venus on Friday night.

Alvarado finished with a 4-1 record in 12-3A and will play Fort Worth Castleberry at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bear Stadium at Brewer High School.

Burleson needed a 19-play, 80-yard scoring drive to punch its bid to the postseason on Friday in its 30-27 victory over Weatherford.

The Roos, also vying for the final 3-5A playoff slot, were gashed by the Elks’ Blake Smith who added four more rushing touchdowns and had 235 yards on 36 carries.

The Elks will take on Arlington High at 9 p.m. Friday at Cowboys Stadium in the bidistrict round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Godley capped off its unbeaten regular season with a 69-7 thrashing of Palmer at home on Friday and will play Troy at 7 p.m. Thursday at Waco ISD Stadium.

The Wildcats clinched their first 15-2A title this year.

Grandview rolled Maypearl, 48-16, on the road on Friday night in a game that determined the second and third playoff spots in 15-2A.

The Zebras (8-1, 4-1) will take on Crawford at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Tarleton State University in Stephenville in the first round of the playoffs.

The Cleburne Yellow Jackets fell, 29-13, to Corsicana on Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

Cleburne (6-4, 3-4) will miss the playoff because of the loss, but doubled their win total from last year.

The Jackets were beat by an average of 29 points in last year’s District 16-4A contests, while this year’s largest margin of defeat came with Cleburne’s loss on Friday.

Joshua fell in heartbreaking fashion on Friday against Arlington Seguin, 21-20, as a valiant effort to upset the Cougars fell by the wayside.

The Owls, playing with a depleted roster and without their first and second-string quarterbacks, saw T.J. McGough complete a 33-yard touchdown pass to Michael Keeton with one second left only to miss the ensuing extra-point.

The Rio Vista Eagles fell, 33-21, to Dallas Life at home on Friday, wrapping up a 1-9, 1-4 campaign under first-year head coach Chris Carpenter.
