The Godley Wildcats were named the Army Strong team of the week by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine after defeating Grandview, 56-28, on Friday.
“Godley and their Week 6 opponent, Grandview, are the two powerhouses in District 15-2A,” Texas Football general manager Adam Hochfelder said. “While Grandview struck first with an early touchdown, the Wildcats controlled the game the rest of the way and garnered the win to improve to 2-0 in district and stay perfect at 7-0 overall.”
The award is given to teams who exhibit teamwork, dedication, discipline, personal courage and integrity, values shared by U.S. Army soldiers.
The award will be presented at a time to be determined by a representative of the U.S. Army.
“The U.S. Army is recognizing the student-athletes at Godley High School for demonstrating qualities similar to those exhibited by its soldiers,” Capt. Adam Drybread said. “We expect to see some of these young men competing at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the college leve or maybe even professionally in the future.”
Wildcat head coach Randy Brawner said the award speaks for itself.
“Any time anybody wants to recognize the team, that’s a good thing,” Brawner said. “I’m happy that someone recognizes the Godley Wildcats.”
Godley cracked the AP Top 10 this week after vaulting to No. 9 in the polls following its win over Grandview.
Brawner said while he is leary of putting too much stock in the many football polls out there, the recognition represents a team and a coaching staff that has come full circle.
“I told these guys at the first day of two-a-days that we were going to coach them like a Top 10 team,” Brawner said. “I said that’s what I expected out of my staff and that’s what I expected out of the players.
“It’s kind of a surreal experience.”
