GODLEY — The Godley Lady Cats and the Rio Vista Lady Eagles were in action Tuesday night at Godley High School as Godley came away with a 25-15, 25-10, 25-20 victory.
Godley head coach Todd Weese said he was proud of his team’s overall performance in the match.
“We kind of lost our focus a little bit at the beginning of Game 3,” Weese said. “I thought overall we played pretty clean all night.”
Game 1 was close early on as the Lady Cats led 8-7. Godley then went on a 13-2 run to stretch the advantage to 21-9.
Rio Vista made it interesting as the Lady Eagles closed on a 6-3 run to pull within 24-15 before Godley scored the final point to take Game 1, 25-15.
In Game 2, the Lady Cats jumped to a 9-1 lead and extended the advantage to 17-5. The Lady Eagles scored three of the next four points to climb within 10 at 18-8, but Godley won seven of the last 10 to finish Game 2 with a 25-10 victory.
“We got the ball to Bella [Shaver] really well,” Weese said. “She’s our best hitter and she had 11 kills and her setter had 17 assists. When you can get that kind of thing going, it’s pretty good.”
The Lady Eagles took advantage of some early Lady Cat miscues for a 5-1 lead in Game 3.
Godley rallied to tie the score at 5-5 with four straight points, setting set the stage for the rest of the game.
The two teams battled to a 12-12 tie before Rio Vista won four straight to take a 16-12 lead.
From there, the Lady Cats went on an 11-2 run to take a 23-18 lead. They were able to split the next four points to win Game 3, 25-20.
Afterwards, Weese said he was proud of how his team rebounded and put away the match.
“We’re trying to take it one game at a time and not look ahead to Grandview and Maypearl who are leading our district,” Weese said. “The next three games we’ve got to stay focused on each one of them and be ready to play. We’ll worry about them when we get to them.”
Allison Brown had four blocks, nine kills and 17 digs for Godley, while Tara Goodloe had 17 assists.
Shaver had 11 kills and Chelsea Clark had six assists and six digs.
Kasey Fairbrother had nine digs for the Lady Cats.
In other District 15-2A action, Grandview defeated Palmer in three games, 25-13, 25-8, 25-12.
