GRANDVIEW — The Zebras didn’t let six penalties in the first half derail their drive for a win in the home opener as Grandview handed Troy a 31-7 loss.
Grandview (2-0) was hit with three penalties for a total of 15 yards within the opening minutes of the game, but two rushes by Reid Golson and three passes, including a 13-yard completion to Brandt Rice and a 26-yard bomb to Justin Burdick, led to a 1-yard burst up the middle by Jerod Cochran.
The Zebras took a 7-0 lead with 6:33 left in the first quarter after a PAT by Rolondo Sandoval.
Troy (1-1) was able to stuff the Zebras at the goal line on Grandview’s next possession, but the Zebras extended their lead when Golson fired a 23-yard touchdown pass to Cochran with 7:53 left in the second quarter.
The Zebra defense piled pressure on Troy quarterback Dylan Sebek with two sacks after two snaps sailed over Sebek’s head.
Sebek incurred two more sacks in the fourth quarter by Rodney Bosher.
Troy’s only score in the game came at the 7:26 mark in the third quarter when Derrick Vasta scooted up the sideline for a 35-yard touchdown to trim Grandview’s lead to seven points.
But Nic Morphew caught a pass from Golson under pressure for a 24-yard score to cushion the Zebra’s lead.
Sandoval added to the lead with 14 seconds left in the third on a 26-yard field goal.
Morphew stepped up again in the middle of the final frame, picking off a Sebek pass to give the Zebras field position on the Trojans’ 42 yard line.
After a 17-yard run by Justin Driver and a 13-yard pickup from Cochran, Golson picked up enough yards to land the Zebras on the 21 yard line.
Troy earned nine penalties in the second half, including two flags for a personal foul and a 15-yard face mask penalty to move Grandview down to the 3-yard line.
Jacob Pannell powered his way into the end zone for the final score.
Grandview’s offense tacked 443 yards, while the defense allowed just 191 total yards.
Cochran led Grandview with 81 yards on 12 carries, while Golson earned 46 yards on 13 carries and Pannell finished the night with four carries for 46 yards.
Rice led the Zebras’ receivers with 95 yards on three receptions, while Morphew caught four passes for 41 yards.
Conrad led the Trojans on the ground with 12 carries for 60 yards, and Chris Chandler led Troy’s receivers with two catches for 23 yards.
Grandview will travel to Hillsboro to take on the Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
