Because of rain, Jackets may hit road for scrimmage

As the Cleburne Yellow Jackets inched closer to Friday’s scrimmage against Fort Worth Brewer, head coach Phil Young said the players had one of their better practices of the week Wednesday morning.

“This is the first practice in four days where we’ve thrown a dry ball,” Young said. “The quarterbacks and receivers finally got to work with a dry ball and they were throwing and catching out there today. We had a really good day today.”

After opening summer drills last week in hot conditions, Wednesday’s morning practice was held under cloudy skies.

The slight rain that fell late in the morning came after the Jackets had cleared the field and headed into the field house for meetings.

The scrimmage has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Yellow Jacket Stadium, but Young said the field had standing water on it, so the scrimmage may be moved to Brewer High School.

With Friday’s scrimmage on the horizon, Cleburne was scheduled for an afternoon practice Wednesday and will conduct one practice today while preparing for Brewer.

After a couple of weeks of hitting their teammates in practices, Young said the players are ready to hit players in another color jersey.

“They’re ready for that,” he said. “You can only hit your teammates for so long. It’s time to hit somebody else.”

Young said some of the Jackets’ projected starters are battling nagging injuries, so the scrimmage will primarily be used to evaluate the younger players.

“This is the only scrimmage we’ve got,” he said. “This is our only time to evaluate some of these guys.”
