Momentum shift

By Matt Tasler/sports@trcle.com

The Cleburne Lady Jackets pushed the Boswell Lady Pioneers to five games before falling 25-23, 14-25, 14-25, 26-24, 15-8 on Tuesday night at Yellow Jacket Gym.

Game 1 went back and forth as the score was tied 10 times in the early going.

Boswell (5-6) took the lead for good at 11-10, but Cleburne (0-5) clawed back into the contest after the Lady Pioneers took a 16-11 lead. The Lady Jackets closed the lead to one a couple of times later in the game before falling 25-23.

Cleburne scored the first three points of Game 2 and led throughout in knotting the score at one game each with a 25-14 win. After Boswell cut the deficit to 19-13, Cleburne ended the game with a 6-1 run.

In the third game, Cleburne jumped out to a 19-6 lead, but Boswell recovered to make it 22-14 before the Lady Jackets finished off the game 25-14.

“In the third and fourth game we relaxed too much,” Cleburne head coach Floyd Rogers said. “That’s what happens with an inexperienced team. When you have the momentum, you’ve got to find a way to kick a team while they’re down.

“We started relaxing a little bit when we had that huge lead in the third game. You saw it kind of happen in the third. They started getting the momentum back. As a coach, you see it, but I know the players don’t. We started relaxing and it just carried over into the fourth game. That’s what an inexperienced team does. It relaxes a bit in those situations.”

There were eight ties early in the fourth game, with Boswell again taking the lead at 11-10. Cleburne knotted the score at 21-21 on a kill by Becca Anderson and led 24-21 before Boswell scored the final five points of the game to force a fifth game.

In the deciding game, Boswell jumped out to 7-2 lead before Cleburne closed it to 11-8. Boswell scored four straight points to end the match.

Shelby Contreras led the Lady Jackets with 33 digs, while Amelia Lanki had four, Linsi Munguia had eight and Sarah Rosser had 14.
