As I have gotten older, golf has started to grow on me

I guess there’s something about golf that draws you in as you get older.

Unless you’re in love with the sport from a young age, I don’t know many people who have “recreationally” enjoyed golf since their youth.

But something I’ve noticed is how more and more young men, in particular, find spending time on the links enjoyable in the early years of young adulthood and forward.

For me, golf has never been much more than an afterthought.

There was the time when I made four hole-in-ones (with witnesses) at a putt-putt course, and still managed to finish fifth out of my five immediate family members.

Maybe that’s why I’ve never really “grabbed ahold of” the sport.

Well, I think that’s starting to change.

Recently, I’ve been playing more golf with my cousin, my uncle and my dad and found myself enjoying it.

There’s something cool about walking the fairway with close friends and relatives and getting in 18 holes on a Saturday morning or evening.

Even if your definition of “driving straight and long” doesn’t exactly involve the fairway in which you’re supposed to be aiming at, there’s an enjoyable quality about golf that I’m glad I’ve started to discover.

With the city of Cleburne opening the new golf course this week, I’m excited to have a local course nearby that I can take my family members and friends to for a round one morning or evening.

One of the coolest things I’ve experienced is even when I hit a horrible slice, the nature of golf is, “It’s OK, try again.”

There’s a good-natured laugh (most of the time), and the offer of a mulligan.

Oh, and another thing that’s nice about actual golf courses is there’s no snarling, creepy clown laughing at you when you hit a ball off of its three-foot long nose.

Although I’m not exactly sure I prefer sand traps, either.

Regardless, the addition of Cleburne’s new course should be good news for any golfer, from the most avid (not me) to the just-for-fun type (me).
