Joshua falls to Southwest High in summer action

FORT WORTH — The Joshua Owls fell to the Fort Worth Southwest High Raiders in a doubleheader of summer league action on Tuesday night, 10-2, and 6-4.

In the opener, the Owls took a quick 2-0 lead after Matt Clouse was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which scored Chase Benton.

The other run came via an RBI single from Blake Ballard, who drove in Tanner Matthews.

The Raiders responded in the bottom of the frame with a run to cut the advantage in half.

Southwest scored two runs in the second and third innings, three in the fourth, and a final run in the fifth inning to close out the margin of victory.

The Owls had five errors in the contest, matching their hitting output, while Southwest had seven hits and no errors.

In the nightcap, the Raiders jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings of play before Joshua was able to rally in the bottom of the frame.

After Clayton Smith walked to lead off the inning, Clouse belted a two-run home run over the left field wall to bring the Owls to within four runs.

Benton also scored in the inning off of a fielder’s choice to trim the deficit to three.

In the bottom of the fifth, Joshua had one final chance to try to overcome the Southwest deficit.

Jonathan Newton hit into a fielder’s choice to score Daniel Martinez to make the score 6-4, but that was as close as the Owls got.

The Raiders finished the second game with 11 hits and two errors, while Joshua had four hits and one error on the night.
