Cleburne veterans Dr. Orvil Joe Stephens and Lt. Col. Michael Hopkins will be honored for their service to the nation at the sixth annual Cleburne Christian Leadership Prayer Breakfast from 6:50-8 a.m., Monday at Cleburne Bible Church.
Tickets for the breakfast are available for $5 from Prayer Breakfast Committee members and the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce and must be purchased in advance. Doors open at 6:15 a.m.
Lt. Col. Brian Birdwell, a survivor of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, will be the keynote speaker at the morning event, with special music provided by Melissa Ward, worship leader for Amazing Grace Prison Ministries and artist in residence at First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls.
Prayer leader will be former National Football League pro Mike Barber.
Stephens’ service record reflects 46 years in the Army and National Guard.
He saw active duty in Korea on four occasions and served in Vietnam from 1969-71. He was also stationed in Germany.
Stephens was a charter member of the Co. A, 49th Armored Division and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross after he retired.
Hopkins’ 23 years in the military began in 1964 after his graduation from Texas A&M University.
His service record includes membership in the Studies and Observation Group, said to be the most secret military unit of the Vietnam War.
Made up of Army Green Berets, Air Force Commandos and Navy Seals, the SOG conducted missions behind enemy lines into North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
In 2001, those who served in the SOG were honored with the Presidential Unit Citation, America’s highest unit decoration.

Misty Shultz: Walking out your faith, even through obstacles
A sweet friend passed away last week after a three-year battle with cancer. In my mind, his death feels so premature. At 66 years old, it seems he had so much time left to do the Lord’s work. He was such a faithful servant of God, and I can’t imagine why it was his time to go when he impacted so many people for Christ.
