Church to hold homecoming celebration



George’s Creek Baptist Church in Somervell County will have its 38th annual homecoming beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The church began in 1885, and this year marks the 103rd anniversary of a church reorganization in 1905.

Activities for the day will include Sunday School at 10 a.m., worship at 10:50 a.m. followed by a covered dish luncheon, and a gospel sing from 2:30-4 p.m.

Chaplain James Covey Jr. of the U.S. Army in Fort Polk, La., will be the guest speaker for the worship service. Covey is the great-grandon of Olan Hewlett, a longtime member of the church. The Lee Gann Quartet of Fort Worth will provide special music for the worship service and the gospel sing.

The church is located on County Road 308, about 1.3 miles north of U.S. 67, east of Glen Rose and west of Cleburne.

Church sets Lord’s Acre for Oct. 18



October is a time of celebrations and harvest. In line with the season, churches throughout Texas hold harvest festivals in which a portion of what has been received is returned to the church. These festivals are often referred to as Lord’s Acre.

Last year, Rio Vista United Methodist Church had one of its best Lord’s Acres ever. Through the support and donations of individuals and local businesses, the church raised enough money to meet its needs and to help local organization such as the Methodist Children’s Home, Operation Blessing in Cleburne, Aldersgate Enrichment Center in Brownwood, and the local Meals on Wheels. Money raised was also used to buy phone cards for those in the Armed Forces.

This year, church organizers hope their Lord’s Acre even will enable them to help more people.

The day’s events begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 18 with a Country Store Flea Market and will be followed by a barbecue brisket lunch at 11 a.m. The bluegrass gospel group, Bluefield Express, will provide live entertainment. Fun activities are planned for the kids, including a bounce house. A live auction will begin at 1 p.m. Hundreds of items will be available at the auction, including sports items, tickets to local attractions, collectibles, tools, gift certificates, books, car care and home needs, and much, much more.
