Joe Elson Herr, 79 of Cleburne, died on April 9, 2014, in Fort Worth following a prolonged illness.
Joe was born in Winterset, Iowa, on Dec. 31, 1934, to Stacy Rush Herr and Leta Benson Herr. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for the rescue of a downed pilot in the South China Sea during a typhoon. After retiring from the Air Force in 1973, Joe and his wife, Sylvia, chose to make their home in Cleburne.
Joe is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dr. Sylvia Lansford Herr. He leaves behind three sons, Joe Herr and wife, Ruth, of Grapevine, Jim Herr of Fort Worth and Ben Herr of Austin. He is also survived by two daughters, Susan Herr Thomas and husband, Terry, of Austin and Holly Herr of Arlington; and two grandsons, Adam and Caleb Thomas of Austin. He has one brother, Marvin Phillips, and wife, Ellen, of Salisbury, Md.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Rosser Funeral Home with a visitation starting at 1 p.m. before the service.
A military burial will be held at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at 9 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2014.
Donations may be made in Joe’s honor to The Disabled Veteran’s Association or your local animal shelter as Joe loved dogs.
