Dr. Gordon Key Bryan

BLAIRSVILLE, Ga.— Graveside services for Cleburne native, Dr. Gordon Key Bryan, 99, formerly of Starkville, Miss., will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2006, in the Cleburne Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Hunnicutt will officiate. A visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2006, at Rosser Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Dr. Bryan were held Friday, March 3, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Starkville, Miss. Pallbearers were P.C. McLaurin, Tip Allen, Krish Bhanzali, Keith Remy, Bill Polk and Fred Blocker. Honorary pallbearers were the elders of the Presbyterian church and the elders emeriti.

Dr. Gordon Key Bryan went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, in Blairsville, Ga., where he was residing with his daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and John Yount. He was born to Benjamin Franklin Bryan and Kitty Myrtle Young Bryan in Cleburne, Texas, on Dec. 20, 1906.

Gordon Key Bryan graduated from Cleburne High School in 1925 and went on to the University of Texas where he earned his B.A. in 1929 and M.A. in 1930. He then earned his Ph.D. in 1949 from the University of California at Los Angeles. He married the former Lake Cummings on Aug. 18, 1929, in Cleburne.

Pursuing a career in education, Dr. Bryan taught at Hebbronville High School in Hebbronville, Texas, from 1929-1930 and Cleburne High School from 1930-1937. He was a member of the faculty of Mississippi State University from 1937-1972, serving as head of the Political Science Department from 1964-1972. He was Visiting Professor of Political Science at Vanderbilt University in 1955; at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, in Odessa, Texas, in 1974 and at Wood Junior college from 1980-1988. Dr. Bryan was awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus at Mississippi State University in 1972.

Over his lifetime, he has been honored by Who’s Who in America, Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Kappa Phi, Blue Key-Golden Triangle YMCA Award, Sloan Foundation Fellow (1943) and General Education Board Fellow (1945-46).

Dr. Gordon Bryan was a member of the Anglin Street Presbyterian Church in Cleburne and was ordained as an elder there in 1933. In 1938, after moving to Mississippi, he was elected as a ruling elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Starkville. In 1986, Dr. Bryan was honored as a ruling elder Emeritus in the First Presbyterian Church of Starkville.

Gordon Key Bryan is survived by his daughter, Lynda Bryan Yount and husband, John, of Blairsville, Ga.; grandchildren, Carol Yount Adams of Fort Worth, Beth Yount Owens of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Ginger Yount Hamrick of Decatur, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Emma Lake Hamrick, Zachary Nathan Adams and Caitlyn Abigail Adams.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lake Cummings Bryan, in 2002. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Palmer Home for Children in Columbus, Miss., or to your favorite charity. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family at condolences@rosserfuneralhome.net.

Ora Day Polk

Funeral services for Ora Day Polk, 90, of Keene, Texas, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2006, at the Crossroads Fellowship Church in Joshua, Texas. Pastor Barry Millet will officiate. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2006, at Strong Memorial Park in Slocum, Texas. The family will receive visitors from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Rosser Funeral Home.

Ora Day Polk passed away on Friday, March 3, 2006, in Cleburne. She was born in Slocum, Texas, on Sept. 13, 1915, to Claude and Gladys McIver. Mrs. Polk was of the Seventh-day Adventist faith and was a member of the Crossroads Fellowship Church.

She is survived by one son, Kenneth Polk of Cleburne; daughters, Glenda Jones and husband, Jimmy, of Cleburne, Shirley Chapline of Elkhart and Norma Jen Brinegar and husband, Wynn, of Gentry, Ark.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman J. Polk; three brothers and one sister.

Billie Winter

Graveside services for Billie Winter, 76, of Cleburne were conducted on Thursday, March 2, 2006, in Rose Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Posey officiated.

Mrs. Winter passed away on Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, in Cleburne. She was born June 26, 1929, in Cleburne to William M. and Tressie E. Gilliam Posey. She married Ira Winter on May 4, 1950, in Cleburne.

She was a retired administrative assistant to Arthur L. Raines, M.D., and was of the Presbyterian faith.

Billie Winter is survived by daughters, Cynthia Dee White and husband, Gilbert, of Ennis and Ms. Tere Winter of Cleburne; grandchildren, John Young of Dallas, Winter Young of Cleburne, MaryAnn Notestine of Austin and Jennifer Diana Notestine of Austin; numerous nieces and nephews; and brother, Marvin Posey and wife, Mary, of Hearne. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira, in 2004; and sister, Dee Stovall, in 1998.

Robert Lee Young

GRANDVIEW — Robert Lee Young, 87, entered eternity with Christ on Thursday, March 2, 2006, at the VA Hospital in Dallas.

Robert was born June 5, 1918, in Santa Anna, Texas, to David C. and Nora Young. He has been a local resident since 1953 when he moved to Grandview from Crane, Texas.

Robert was a Veteran of World War II serving in Guadalcanal. He was a self-employed carpenter and a founding member of the Grace Baptist Church in Grandview. His first wife, Lodell Vest Young; four brothers and two sisters, preceded him in death.

He is survived by wife, Lucille Young of Grandview; son, Herman Lee Young and wife, Donna, of Harlingen; daughters, Phyllis Lodell Edans and husband, Pat, of Keller and Patricia Ann Irvin and husband, Jerry, of Spring Branch; brother, Oliver Young and wife, Estelle, of Walnut Springs; sister, Anna Noles and husband, Waylon, of Throckmorton; grandchildren, Benjamin Young, Brian Young, Melissa Farley, Justin Farley, Robert Clark, Robin Clark, Trey Edans, Jeremy Irvin and Jason Irvin; and great-grandchildren, Kelsay Clark, Michelle Young and Will Parr.

Bernice Miller

Funeral services for Bernice Miller, 88, of Rio Vista, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2006, at the First Baptist Church of Rio Vista. The Rev. Paul Pinyan will officiate. Burial will be in Derden Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2006, in Fort Worth. She was born Nov. 13, 1917, in Italy, Texas, to Johnnie Wesley and Hettie Myrtle Cline Hastings. She married Horace Harvy Miller on April 17, 1938.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Rio Vista. She lived in Goldsmith, Texas, from 1940-84. Her hobbies were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, oil paintings and genealogy. Her four children were graduates of Odessa High School.

Bernice Miller is survived by three sons, Harvy Miller of Fort Worth, Lowell Miller and wife, Kay, of Springfield, Mo., and Jimmie Miller of Palestine, Texas; daughter, Peggy Smith of Garland, Texas; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be held at Crosier-Pearson Cleburne Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Tom W. Seelbach

BURLESON — Tom W. Seelbach, 78, owner and operator of Tom’s Trading Post in Burleson, passed away peacefully Friday, March 3, 2006, at a local nursing home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethesda Baptist Church in Burleson. Burial will be at Burleson Memorial Park. Visitation is from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, make donations to Bethesda Baptist Church of Burleson Building Fund, the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cancer Society or Lion’s Hospice.

Tom was born in Mountain View, Okla., on Jan. 23, 1928. He came to Fort Worth at the tender age of 16. He worked at various jobs, from selling magazines to cattle feed. In 1966, he opened Tom’s Trading Post in Burleson, a farm equipment store, where he bought and sold new and used equipment until he retired and sold out to his daughter and son-in-law in 1988.

He loved working with his cattle and haying. But most of all he loved his wife of 57 years, Peggy. Until his illness they spent all their time together. They loved to travel and, in the spring, driving around looking at the wildflowers. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Tommy; his parents, Jasper and Ethel Seelbach; and his sister, Louise Hilburn.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy; daughter, Linda Scott and husband, Mickey; daughter, Peggy Fothergill and husband, Sam; daughter, Karen Smith; brothers, David Seelbach and wife, Madie, Cliford Seelbach and wife, Barbara; and sister, Betty Jean Suiter and husband, Jessie; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
