Elizabeth Rae Taylor Hudgins
Former resident Elizabeth Rae Taylor Hudgins, widow of John Brobson Hudgins, passed away quietly and with dignity with her son at her side on Sunday evening, Dec. 11, 2005.
Mrs. Hudgins, 90, was born in Cleburne on Oct. 15, 1915, daughter of William Reese Taylor and Willie Lou Haley Taylor. She attended school in Cleburne, and lived here and in and around Fort Worth for her entire life. She served her country as a clerk for the Army during World War II and honored her family with service in the home for a lifetime.
Elizabeth’s Johnson County roots ran long. Her father was a store owner in Burleson and later worked many years for the Cleburne Water Department. Mrs. Hudgins’ grandfather, Allen Haley, came to Johnson County in the fall of 1852 with his father, mother and three brothers.
The Haleys established a ranch and horse race track on the Haley Branch of the Nolan River very near the Chisholm Trail, just outside of Rio Vista. Her great-grandfather, Capt. Thomas F. Haley, died while commanding a Johnson County Calvary Company near the end of the Civil War, and his wife and four sons continued to operate the ranch and race track until 1887. Several Haleys continued to live in Johnson County for many more years.
Survivors include a son, John P. Hudgins of Austin; a daughter, Betty L. Angelo of Houston; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was much loved, and will long be remembered with solemn joy.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today, Dec. 15, 2005, at Rosser Funeral Home. Afterwards, she was buried in the Cleburne Memorial Cemetery next to her husband of over 37 years.
