James Herbert Bentley, known as “Jim” to his friends and “Abar” to his oldest friends, passed away Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at a Fort Worth hospice.
Memorials: Jim’s family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Cancer Research Foundation of North Texas (www.crfnt.com) and the Cancer Assistance Fund of North Texas (www.cafnt.org).
Jim was born Oct. 18, 1952, in Cleburne, the son of Tom and Millie Bentley. He attended Cleburne public schools and was active in sports, playing Little League baseball, basketball in junior high, and many other sports.
His love of sports continued throughout his life. He played on the Cleburne YMCA volleyball team for five years and in 1991 coached the Thresher Construction men’s softball team to their win of the city title, an achievement he remembered with great pride the rest of his life.
Jim also loved to read and was a talented writer. The first publication of his poems was in the Electronic Cheeseburger, the underground newspaper he co-published with cartoonist Mack White in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Later, his work was published in the literary anthologies “Third Dementia” and “Blanco,” as well as his own books, “Planet Partners,” “Loops,” “Canvas” and “Carnival around the Corner.”
Jim loved music, too. His tastes were wide-ranging and his knowledge of music encyclopedic. He was a friend and mentor to a great many musicians and very often a collaborator as well, co-writing songs with the noted musicians David Schnaufer, Loretta Callens, and Ryan Elmore of the band Igneous Grimm.
Jim also worked in film. In the late 1980s, he worked with producer Richard Mosley on the popular “Texas Girls” series and in 1993 was associate producer of the acclaimed documentary “Day 51: The True Story of Waco.”
Jim was a creative, generous, fun-loving, poetic spirit whose wit, intelligence and good-natured smile will be sorely missed by his many friends and family.
Survivors: his son, Aaron Bentley of Godley; sister, Barbara Patrick; niece, Tammy Cameron; great-niece, Kathryn Cameron, all of Fort Worth; and aunts, Ruth Janzen and Gladys Nachtwey of Fond du Lac, Wis.
