Monica's Manic Musings
The sometimes regular thoughts of a newsroom chick.

No, I do not like politics
I don't know how many people asked me yesterday if I was going to watch the debate. My answer every time was "No, I do not like politics." Then, they give me a look like I'm crazy or something. Not every person in the world hangs on every word Palin or Biden or McCain or Obama say. I'm doing good just know their names. Not like it's not forced down our throats every five seconds.
I'm so tired of the election already and we still have a month to go.

Long overdue update on my life
Friday was a month since I lasted blogged. Obviously to say that I have been busy is nothing. It's been non-stop in the Times-Review office, with two magazines in the past month. Somehow, like always, we managed to get it all done.
I'm teaching Wednesday night 5th grade Bible class at my church now, wishing I was back to Sunday mornings. At least when I taught Sunday mornings I had the weekend to prepare. Now I'm lucky to even make it to church in time by the time I get off work. I do enjoy it though. This weekend we celebrated our church's 75th anniversary with special services and a potluck at Burleson High School. My boyfriend's parents and Mimi came so it was nice to see them again.
Saturday we had a family reunion for his dad's side of the family. A ton of people gathered at his aunt and uncle's house in Everman for the occasion. Lots and lots of barbecue, potato salad and desserts later, we all had a good time.
Anyway, I will try to be better about updating this when I get the chance. If you get the chance, e-mail me with questions or comments at features@trcle.com. Maybe I'll write a response to one of your e-mails in my next blog!

Guess I should post something
So I haven't done as well as I had hoped to when I started this blog. Things have been so busy lately with football sections, magazines and the daily newspaper business. Last Friday I took a day off for the first time in a long time and treated myself to a weekend in Oklahoma camping with my boyfriend's family. We had a grand time, and I found myself as red as a tomato as I usually am when the sun hits my pale skin.
Tomorrow I'm looking forward to the annual United Way of Johnson County kickoff luncheon. The event always promises a good meal, speaker and lots of opportunities to meet people. Thursday I'll be attending the Keene Chamber of Commerce luncheon and going to the Children's Advocacy Center to listen to a speaker. September plans so far include Dachshund Days, Antique Alley, the Zonta Club Adult Spelling Bee and the Cleburne Ironhorse Triathlon. And school just started. I hope you all are enjoy the busy August month.
Happy birthday to my brother on Friday!

Shop 'til you drop this weekend
Don't forget that this weekend is the always-anticipated tax-free weekend in the DFW area. This is particularly dangerous for me considering today is payday! Good thing I'm working most of this weekend.

And they lived happily ever after ...
Once upon a time there was a young woman who met the man of her dreams. They were married, and they lived happily ever after ... That’s the way it usually goes right? I’ve been hearing and seeing this story more often lately than ever it seems. Going to a Christian school, it seemed like girls were sent there to receive their MRS degree more than an education. So many girls I went to school with married during school or right after graduation. I just wasn’t looking for that. Maybe I’m too independent, or maybe I just didn’t find the right guy. Am I wrong to want to support myself and establish my own identity while living on my own before giving myself to someone else? I am happy for my friends who were able to find everlasting love before me. They deserve it! They are happy. But I just wasn’t looking for it; I’ll find it when the timing is right in my life. I guess this blog really boils down to this: I’m tired of people asking when I’m going to get married. Maybe there’s a reason I don’t want to. Maybe I like being single. Just because I’ve been dating someone a year doesn’t mean we have to run off and get married. Of course, my editor thinks we’ve already done that. Ha! Don’t worry though, when and if I choose to get married, I’ll let you know.

Black & White Gala an enjoyment
Saturday night I had the pleasure of attending the 16th annual Black & White Gala. This was my second time to attend, so this time I knew what to expect. I arrived at the gala at 5 p.m., ready to take the committee members’ photographs. After that was accomplished, I walked around and looked at the set up. I purposely do not bring my wallet to the gala and other functions like that so that I am not tempted to spend my money. I love supporting the causes but I prefer to do it before so my spending doesn’t get out of control. There were too many auctions I wanted. Guests started arriving around 6 p.m., and I greeted the ones that I knew, stopping them to get pictures of them all dolled up. Dinner was a treat, as usual. The Renaissance Worthington Hotel staff provided us with some of the best steaks I have ever had, among other items. Dessert was a treat as well. I always look forward to the dessert, because I know it will be something fantastic. A type of German chocolate dessert in a martini glass tantalized my taste buds. A cute strawberry decorated with a chocolate tuxedo was also tasty. Joe Ripple, a former CISD assistant superintendent, returned once again to emcee the night’s activities. Crowds gathered around the silent auction items and big board auctions as the closing time drew near. Then everyone headed back into the ballroom for the exciting live auction. I watched as guests bid more than I make in half a year on items that I could only dream of having. I really wanted the auction which featured tickets to a Toby Keith concert and meeting him afterwards. Whoever won that auction, please call me! I’d love to come. The Black and White Surprise this year was an adorable cocker spaniel puppy, and I loved playing with him before he was given to the auction winners. The evening closed with music provided by Cuvee. As guests began making their way towards the dance floor, I decided that it was time to go home, take off my heels and relax. It was a long, but very enjoyable, night. Congrats to the Black and White committee on another fantastic gala! I look forward to next year at the Omni Hotel.

My first venture into the blogging world
This is my first entry into Monica's Manic Musings. I tried blogs when I was younger, but I could never keep them up very well. I would write a lot for a week or so and then forget to write anything for two or three months. I hope that I am able to keep this blog up better, but no promises! I figure since this is the first blog I should do the usual introduction bit. So without further ado, I give you an introduction:
I am Monica Green, features editor at the Cleburne Times-Review. I am 23, I live in Cleburne and my family lives in Burleson. My father, Johnny, is the co-director of the National Design, Construction, and Soil Mechanics Center, a branch of USDA-NRCS, in Fort Worth. Phew. That's always a mouthful to say! My mother, Sandra, has been a teacher for many years and is looking for a new job down here in Texas now. My brother, Zac, will be a freshman at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla., this fall, and my sister, Ally, is a junior at Joshua High School. I go to Burleson Church of Christ, where I am part of a wonderful singles class. I enjoy teaching Sunday morning elementary Bible classes, coaching Leadership Training for Christ teams and participating in various activities.
Now that I feel like I've given you a resume of my life, I'd like to know a little bit about my readers! If you have any questions or comments about my blog, feel free to e-mail me at features@trcle.com. Have a blessed day!
