Wednesday morning’s Holy Week Service at the Cleburne Conference Center will feature lay speaker Peggy Cross, with special music provided by Dr. Joe Martin.
“Joe Martin has given of his time and talents to our Holy Week observance through the years in providing the pre-service music,” said Vance Castle, co-chairman of the Cleburne Christian Business Club’s Holy Week Committee. “I know we will all be blessed by the musical message he will bring as our guest soloist at Wednesday’s service.”
Martin was honored in December by fellow members of Field Street Baptist Church for his 50 years of service as a church pianist. Thirty-eight of those years have been at Field Street.
Cheryl Doggett, president-elect of Cleburne Christian Business Club, will lead the service as host of the day, with Matt and Debbie Reynolds serving as fellowship leaders.
Stan Gray will provide the invocation, and Tom Hargrave will bring the benediction.
Neal Logan, whose son, U.S. Army Sgt. Trent Logan, has been serving in Afghanistan as a member of B Company, 2/508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
Churches and community groups to be recognized at Wednesday’s service are the members of Nolan River Baptist Church, Calvary Baptist Church, First Christian Church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, the board of directors of United Way of Johnson County, Cleburne Economic Development, Toastmasters, East Cleburne Community Center, and the staff and volunteers of Meals on Wheels.
Kirklin Cross will read the scripture preceding his wife’s message. The Crosses are members of First Mt. Zion Baptist, where Peggy serves as a Bible study teacher.
A native of New Orleans, the first 15 years of Peggy’s teaching career were dedicated to their eight children: Danette, Angela, Erin, Kirk Jr., Solomon, Samuel, Joel and Leslie Yvonne.
She returned to college and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education in 1994 from Southwestern Adventist University.
In 2004 she was awarded a master’s degree in education administration from Tarleton State University.
She taught for four years with Alvarado ISD and is now in her 11th year with Cleburne ISD, where she teaches gifted students at Santa Fe Elementary. She also taught at Coleman Elementary.
Cross was among the speakers at this year’s God Is Love Conference, sponsored by Operation Blessing of Johnson County.
“Months of planning and prayerful consideration have produced the great speakers and musicians we will hear at this year’s Holy Week services,” said Phyllis Fife, Christian Business Club president. “We are so blessed as citizens of Johnson County to be able to come freely together in congregation and fellowship in Jesus’ name, as we remember the price paid by Him and His joyous Resurrection.”
Services are from 7-7:50 a.m. through Friday, with fellowship beginning at 6:45.
Joah Anderson, a senior at Cleburne High School, will be the lay speaker of Thursday’s service with Bosque County Judge Cole Word speaking on Good Friday.

Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
