Police officer benefit concert today

By Matt Smith/msmith@trcle.com

— A concert benefiting a Grandview police officer injured in the line of duty kicks off at 5 p.m. today in Alvarado.

Officer David Dunaway suffered life-threatening injuries in June after his patrol car slid off the road and struck a tree while he was en route to assist a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputy on County Road 405 north of Grandview.

Dunaway suffered injuries to his face, legs and feet and remained trapped in his car for more than an hour.

Flown to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, Dunaway spent eight days in the trauma unit. He faces more surgeries and rehabilitation, said Tom Dunaway, his father.

Officer Dunaway’s Code 3 Benefit Concert will help raise money for Dunaway and his family.

The Cleburne Police Officers Association, Cleburne Police Officers Families Association and Bless the Badge helped to organize the event.

Members of those organizations will collect cover charges and sell barbecue.

The event takes place at Turkey Creek Bar and Grill at 8705 Farm-to-Market Road 3136. Tickets are $8 per person or $15 for couples.

Artists scheduled to perform include: Amos Moses, the Willie Cordova Band, Austin Allsup and Brook Wallace and the Steve Helms Band.

Justin Frazell, morning disc jockey for KFWR/95.9 The Ranch will be on hand to emcee the show.

All barbecue proceeds will benefit Dunaway and his family, said Shane Wickson, president of the CPOA.

An acoustic guitar, donated by M&M Pawn Shop in Johnson County, will also be auctioned in a silent auction with proceeds going to Dunaway’s family, said Shawn Watson, owner of Edge Events who also helped organize the benefit.

The guitar is signed by Pat Green, Ray Bowen, Roger Creager, Rich O’Toole, Brandon Ryder, Steve Helms, Austin Allsup and Charla Corn, Watson said.

Turkey Creek owners Adam and Blair Lee also intend to donate a portion of the night’s beverage sales to the cause, Wickson said.

Residents unable to attend tonight’s event or those who would like to help more can make a donation in Dunaway’s name to the Bless the Badge Code 3 fund at any Compass Bank location.
