Twenty-nine TEAM School students received their diplomas in graduation ceremonies held Friday at Eastern Heights Church.
Members of the fall 2010 graduating class included Fidencio “Junior” Amaya, India Bransom, Rhema Brewer, Ashley Byrd, Valeria Collazo, Lani Crain, Jacob Dilworth, Jacqualine Dominguez, Courtney Ellis, Destinee Golaz, Heather Guajardo, Martin Gurrola, Yeesseenia Hernandez, Roxanna Hudson, Destoney Johnson, Li Li, Daniel Miller, Mercedes Neagle, Katie Pierce, Peyton Pullen, Jessica Roden, Casey Rogers, Valerie Rowley, Kassie Ryder, Caitlin Spady, Anthony Steck, Alisha Taylor, Maria Vidana and Terrie Williams.
“This diploma you receive today will make you better prepared for a technical program, college and your place in the workforce,” said Gay Roden, CISD executive director of bilingual student services, who served as guest speaker at the event.
“There may have been a principal or teacher who encouraged you to apply to TEAM School, where they knew you would be successful,” Roden said. “You may have made the decision independently, because you are on your own, but there have been teachers at TEAM School and others in your life that helped you along the way to this very important day.”
“I encourage you to do some ‘pay back’ today,” Roden said. “Find the person who gave you that emotional support and thank them.”
Roden also asked the graduates to think about the concept of “paying forward” the kindnesses that had been shown to them in their journey through school and to graduation.
“In the movie ‘Pay It Forward’ a teacher challenges her students to make the world a better place by doing good deeds to someone new rather than trying to pay someone back for their help,” she said. “Be an encourager to someone who is struggling, whether it’s a family member or a person having a bad day. Give someone a smile, a friendly word. Make this attitude a part of who you are as you move forward as a valuable, contributing member of society.”
Superintendent Dr. Tim Miller, who presented diplomas to the graduates, asked the honorees to stay in touch with their teachers.
“We’re sending you away as graduates,” Miller said. “But we’ll never know the true fruit of our labors unless we hear from you about your successes. This is the end of one chapter in your life and the start of a new one.”
“We constantly hear from people asking about TEAM School and its purpose and the impact on our students,” Miller said. “You graduates are a big part of the success of the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years.”
Several graduates were recognized as recipients of $2,000 Early High School Graduation Scholarships awarded to students who graduate in three years under the state’s recommended graduation plan. The recipients included Rhema Brewer, Destinee Golaz, Destoney Johnson and Maria Vidana.

Officials, residents remember those who gave it all
A robust breeze alleviated the heat somewhat Monday morning at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, but also played pandemonium with the setting up of a memorial table for POW and MIA veterans. Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
