Wildfires near The Retreat and Fisherman’s Paradise neighborhoods flared back up in spots during the weekend. Firefighters from several county departments and the U.S. Forest Service were still on scene Monday to monitor the situation and knock hot spots down as they encountered them. A bulldozer team was also on scene to cut fire lines.
Firefighters initially responded to the blaze on July 3. That fire burned about 250 acres and threatened homes in both neighborhoods before a heavy rainfall swept through the area.
Firefighters remained on site for more than 24 hours and returned to battle flare ups several times since. Helicopters several times, including this weekend, dropped water over inaccessible areas.
Despite the persistence of the fires, firefighters have reported no property damage or injuries.
Cleburne and Rio Vista firefighters responded to Kyle Bullard Road and Farm-to-Market Road 916 at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday to protect a threatened maintenance building in The Retreat neighborhood. Firefighters instructed a maintenance worker to mow tall weeds near the area and remained on site until the danger of fire extension passed.
Cleburne firefighters responded back to the area at about 11 a.m. Sunday to assist Rio Vista and other firefighters. Cleburne firefighters used about 150 gallons of water to put out a small grass fire, which was a rekindle of a fire from the previous day. They continued on to near The Retreat to assist in the control of fire lines and protect a bulldozer being used to cut fire lines. They remained on site until 3:12 p.m.
Winds whipped up more fire spots on Monday, which firefighters were in place to attack and monitor.
Cleburne firefighters responded to the 2200 block of County Road 1125 Friday to assist Godley firefighters with a small grass fire. Godley had the fire under control when Cleburne firefighters arrived. Cleburne firefighters helped extinguish remaining hot spots and unrolled two round bales of burning hay, which they doused with about 350 gallons of water.
Cleburne firefighters responded to a call involving a cement truck on fire in the 1900 block of South Main Street at 4:10 a.m. Thursday.
The truck driver told firefighters there was no fire upon arrival. The man said the truck’s turbo had gone out and oil was being leaked into the exhaust manifold and into the intake. Workers put two gallons of oil into the truck and moved it into a lot to remove the cement from the drum.
They were unable to get the truck to the wash tower and wanted to start it up again after it caught on fire again during the cement off-load, according to reports.
To keep them from having to start the truck up again, firefighters pumped 601 gallons of water into the truck’s cement drum to save it. Workers told firefighters they planned to turn the drum by using hydraulics from another truck.
Cleburne firefighters responded to a grass and brush fire near the 1900 block of South Main Street at 3:32 p.m. Wednesday on a property south of, but connected, to the old cattle auction barn.
Firefighters found an area of about 10 feet by 25 feet burning, mainly leaves and old wood. A 10-gallon propane tank burning in the area was later vented and did not explode. A five-gallon propane tank sat near the fire, but was not affected. Firefighters extinguished the blaze with one tank full of water and foam.
The property owner told firefighters that workers had been cutting metal for scrap earlier and must have ignited something with their torches.
Police calls
Cleburne police arrested a man on Friday after he crashed through two gates at a manufacturing plant in the 3300 block of Pipeline Road.
The driver, Anthony Daniel Garcia, 32, of Alvarado allegedly entered the parking lot of the business at about 10 p.m. Garcia then allegedly struck a closed gate, entered a fenced-in area, drove around the back side of the plant, then struck another gate. Garcia’s Pontiac Grand Prix then came to rest just outside the gate. Police arrested him on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
A Walmart shopper became $300 poorer on Sunday. The victim reported that a man approached him in the store and asked to borrow money. When the victim removed his wallet to count his money, another man approached from behind, grabbed the money from his hand and fled through the store’s automotive department, according to reports.

Officials, residents remember those who gave it all
A robust breeze alleviated the heat somewhat Monday morning at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, but also played pandemonium with the setting up of a memorial table for POW and MIA veterans. Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
