What better way to spend a weekend than helping out your neighbor?
Christmas in Action, a local nonprofit that repairs homes of the low-income, disabled or elderly, will hold its annual workday on Saturday.
“We really need volunteers to come out and help on Saturday and Sunday,” said Teresa Richardson, secretary of the organization.
Seven projects are scheduled for this year’s event. Volunteers wishing to help are asked to meet at 8 a.m. in the Walmart parking lot in Cleburne. Free T-shirts and lunch will be provided at 1 p.m.
“The home owners were able to take care of things and now due to age or financial restraints, they need help,” Richardson said. “They are very appreciative of the community.
“We really appreciate all of the contractors, electricians, roofers, plumbers, etc. A lot will donate their time if we buy the parts.”
The house at 650 Barber St. is sponsored by Wal-mart Distribution Center. Work at this house includes reconstructing the front porch, plumbing, electrical work and exterior painting.
The house at 303 Mansfield is sponsored by Home Depot, and work will consist of kitchen reconstruction and exterior painting.
The house at 780 Chase is sponsored by Chesapeake. Work required includes reconstructing the bathroom and electrical and plumbing repairs.
The house at 308 Sabine is sponsored by Jeremy Collins Construction. Volunteers will work on kitchen floor repair and interior sheetrock.
The house at 507 Poindexter is sponsored by Sherwin Williams. Work will be exterior painting.
The house at 608 Mansfield is sponsored by Cleburne Fire Fighters Association and work will be electrical hazards and bathroom reconstruction.
On Sunday, the house at 308 County Road 318 in Keene will be worked on. It is sponsored by Place of Grace Sabbath, a Seventh-day Adventist church, and work includes exterior painting, new windows and floor repair.
Volunteers for Sunday’s project should meet at 8 a.m. at Chisholm Trail Academy on Old Betsy Road in Keene.
“CIA is involved all throughout the year doing wheelchair ramps, electrical hazards, plumbing issues and more,” Richardson said. “This year alone we’ve already handled like 15 houses. That’s what we’re all about, bringing the community together to work together for the good of the citizens.”

Officials, residents remember those who gave it all
A robust breeze alleviated the heat somewhat Monday morning at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, but also played pandemonium with the setting up of a memorial table for POW and MIA veterans. Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
