Mother who lost son starts grief support group at THC

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne nurse Beverly Barton said she knows what it’s like to lose someone.

On Christmas Eve 1987, she watched her 12-year-old son, Michael Barton, pass away in a hospital bed.

“He stopped breathing, and they didn’t resuscitate him,” Barton said. “It has been a 25-year journey of learning how to get past this.”

It was a journey, Barton said, of learning how to “not be a mom” after being a mom for more than a decade. Of dealing with Michael’s clothes, toys and belongings after he suddenly wasn’t there.
