2009's Top Ten: No. 6 Cleburne ISD recovers from TEA

Mike Bailey wasn’t the last Cleburne ISD administrator from the Robert Damron regime to resign under new superintendent Dr. Ronny Beard.

Stepping aside in April, Bailey said he never attempted to shirk responsibility for his share of blame in the funding issues that resulted in a Texas Education Agency investigation of Cleburne ISD.

Bailey resigned his position as director of district operations effective June 30.

Janet Walker, executive director of curriculum and instruction and student support and also an administrator under Damron, resigned in June to become director of federal and state program compliance with Everman ISD.

Penny Morrison, who served as special education director since 1993, resigned in July to accept a position with the Education Service Center, Region XI.

Beard hired Dr. Darlene Callender, assistant superintendent for special programs, who became superintendent at Keene in December when Kevin Sellers, Keene’s top man, took a job as assistant superintendent at Joshua.

By September, Cleburne ISD appeared almost fully recovered from TEA sanctions. But Wendell Dempsey rode a campaign of reform into a spot on the school board over No. 2 vote-getter Tolin Navarrete.

Because of the process the district has made, TEA monitor Monte Geren has curtailed the amount of time that he spends in the district.
