Herron-McClellan home ready to head to ‘Grandmother’s House’

Save Old Cleburne’s 33rd annual Candlewalk Historic Home Tour will be from 1-9 p.m. Dec. 5 and will have six turn-of-the-century homes.

The Herron-McClellan home at 505 N. Anglin will be decorated using the theme To Grandmother’s House We Go.

Paul and Joy McClellan moved to Cleburne nine years ago from Atlanta, Ga., to be near their daughter and her family.

Paul, the cook in the family, knew this was the house for him when he saw the kitchen.

It’s large with a bead-board ceiling, beautiful cabinetry and generous windows.

Joy loved the setting of the house with the large porch and oak trees surrounding the home.

Their two-story, classical-style home was built in 1893.

The main entry is a paneled wood door, with lights set under the transom.

A second-floor entry, with access to the second story, is enlivened by a two-story gallery that covers a third of the house and becomes a one-story porch across the other two-thirds of the front façade.

A portrait of the five McClellan children is displayed over one of the home’s two fireplaces.

The previous owners installed beautiful bookcases in what was once a former bedroom.

These built-ins serve as a library and showcases the McClellan’s collection of Mexican, hand-carved animals, black Talavera pottery, Aguilar angels and figurines.

Paul and Joy have made frequent trips to Mexico. On each trip they would visit Aguilar Pottery, where they enjoyed competing with buyers from New York and Europe for the latest local creations.

Their grandchildren visit from Texas, Georgia and California. The children love the house and playing outside in the “treehouse” on stilts in the backyard.

The inside walls are ever changing with their painted artwork.

Paul and Joy are active members of Save Old Cleburne, Keep Cleburne Beautifu and their church.

Step into the past in Grandmother’s house where the children and grandchildren come together for good food, family comfort and Christmas celebration.

Heritage Trails Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is sponsoring this year’s Christmas Candlewalk Historic Home Tour.

Pre-sale adult ticket prices are $10, and $5 for children under 12 through Dec. 4. Prices will be $12 and $5 the day of Candlewalk. Tickets are available at the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce at 1511 W. Henderson, the Layland Museum at 201 N. Caddo, and Anglin Rose Bed & Breakfast at 808 S. Anglin.
