CFD responds to industrial oven fire

Editor’s note: Information in the following story is taken from public records on file with the Cleburne police and fire departments.

An industrial oven fire at Johns Manville on Thursday led to no injuries.

Cleburne firefighters responded at 6:05 p.m. to a call about an industrial oven fire within a structure.

Firefighters arrived to find a large industrial structure with light to moderate smoke emitting from the top and front of the building.

The fire was concentrated within the oven and duct system running from the oven.

The building’s internal fire extinguishing system activated before firefighters arrived.

Once the oven was shut down, firefighters completed extinguishing the remaining fire within the oven and ducts. Workers then reactivated the buildings exhaust units to clear smoke.

Firefighters allowed workers to re-enter to check and restart the oven. Firefighters noted no external damage to areas around the oven or ducts.

Initial investigation showed that an excess product buildup lining the walls of the oven apparently ignited because of the extreme heat used in normal operations.

Firefighters reported no injuries connected to the incident.

Traffic accidents

Cleburne police responded to three traffic accidents, which resulted in no, or minor, injuries.

Police responded to a single-vehicle accident near the corner of Hix and Boone streets at 5:53 p.m. Thursday.

A man driving a Ford Focus eastbound in the 500 block of Hix Road told police he became distracted by his cell phone, left the road and struck a tree.

The man may have suffered an injury, but he refused medical treatment.

A wreck involving two vehicles at the intersection of North Main and Claude streets on Wednesday resulted in no injuries.

The accident occurred at about 4 p.m.

The driver of a Chevrolet Lumina was traveling northbound on North Main Street in the left-hand lane. The driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe, westbound on Claude Street, failed to yield right of way at a stop sign, entered the intersection, and struck the Lumina.

Police cited the Tahoe driver for failure to yield right of way and the Lumina driver for driving while license invalid.

A wreck on Nov. 9 also involved no injuries.

The accident occurred at about 11:45 a.m. near the intersection of East Henderson and Weeks streets. A Pontiac Firebird was northbound on Weeks Road parked at a stop sign.

The second car cut the corner while turning left, struck the Firebird, and fled the scene.

The two people in the Firebird described the other vehicle as a brown Chevrolet of unknown model.

Police responded to a restaurant parking lot in the 1400 block of West Henderson Street on Wednesday at 5:26 p.m. Someone had shattered the driver-side window of a vehicle.
