Digital companies constantly unveil new tablets, smartphones and even “smart TVs” that end up in households of children who use these devices to stay entertained.
But does having easy access to these devices do more harm than good on brain development in children?
According to a 2009 study by Child Trends Data Bank and Common Sense Media, 93 percent of children ages 3-17 had access to Internet in their homes and 52 percent of kids under 8 had access to mobile devices, like smartphones, iPods and tablets. Statistics from A.C. Nielsen show that toddlers between the ages of 2 and 5 are watching more than 32 hours of television each week.
Dr. Ayman Arouse, a pediatrician on the medical staff at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Cleburne, said the increasing amount of technology can have a negative influence on children.
