Early voting starts today
Early voting began today and continues through May 5.
Cleburne residents will vote for a city council race, a local option election and Cleburne ISD races.
The sole polling location for early voting is at the Johnson County Elections Office in the Johnson County Courthouse at 2 N. Main St. in Cleburne.
Monday’s hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. as are the hours for May 5. Voting hours on all other days are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In the sole contested city council race, Craig Robert Nunn is competing against Gayle White for the Single Member District 2 seat.
In the option election, Cleburne residents will vote on a proposal to legalize the sale of beer and wine for off premise consumption. They will also vote on a measure that would allow the sale of mixed beverages in restaurants with both food and beverage certificates.

Austin College names honor society inductees
SHERMAN — Elizabeth Wilson, daughter of Greg and Jane Wilson, was among students selected this year for induction into international and national honor societies based on academic achievement during Austin College’s annual Honors Convocation Thursday. The event highlights academic and leadership achievements of students and faculty.
Austin College honor societies and related academic departments are Phi Beta Kappa, overall academic excellence; Alpha Chi, overall academic accomplishment; Alpha Psi Omega, drama; Beta Beta Beta, biological sciences; Delta Phi Alpha, German; Eta Sigma Phi, classics; Omicron Delta Epsilon, economics; Phi Alpha Theta, history; Pi Delta Phi, French; Pi Sigma Alpha, political science; Psi Chi, psychology; Sigma Delta Pi, Spanish; and Sigma Pi Sigma, physics.

Times-Review staffer wins award
Pete Kendall, who rejoined the Times-Review editorial staff in September, won first place in feature writing recently in the semi-weekly 10,000-plus circulation division of the North and East Texas Press Association.
Kendall won as a member of the Hood County News staff for a story about Nelson “Cooney” Mitchell, hanged in 1875 in Granbury for a crime he may not have committed.

Cleburne pulls away from Burleson, 62-48
The Cleburne Yellow Jackets beat Burleson, 62-48, on Friday night at Yellow Jacket Gym to move to 2-7 in District 7-A play. Burleson fell to 2-7 in league play with the loss.

On Friday night at Yellow Jacket Stadium, Cleburne picked up its first win of the District 7-4A season, 66-60, over Burleson, which fell to 3-8.

Fallen deputy Clifton Taylor’s sister, Megan Davis, takes a picture of a painting of her brother on Monday during a dedication to the deputy. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office renamed its building to the Clifton Taylor Law Enforcement Center in honor of the deputy who lost his life during a disturbance call in April. The picture was painted by Fort Worth artist Gary Crouch. Three pictures were made and one will hang in the Clifton Taylor Law Enforcement Center. The other two paintings were presented as gifts to Taylor’s parents and his fiancee.
