Presidential seal: Bush stops in Cleburne
Former President George Bush stopped in Cleburne Saturday morning to honor wounded veterans traveling from San Antonio to Arlington by bicycle.
The veterans, participating in the Wounded Warriors Road 2 Recovery Texas Challenge spent the night in Cleburne at the Comfort Inn.
The group also visited students at Smith Middle School in Cleburne on Friday and ate dinner at American Legion Post 426 in Alvarado on Friday night.
John Wordin founded R2R two years ago. The organization hosts bicycle rides throughout America to raise funds for recovery labs to help injured veterans.
“I’m thrilled to be here with big John and the R2R riders,” Bush said. “And most of all to tell all you veterans how proud I am to be in your presence.”
Bush joked about his new status as a private citizen.
“People ask what I miss about being president, and, well, I miss a lot of things,” Bush said. “For one thing, if I were still president, I wouldn’t have had to drive from Dallas to Cleburne this morning, and I wouldn’t have had to stop for the red lights.
“But I most miss being the commander in chief of the U.S. military. We’re a blessed country because we have people who volunteer to serve in a time of danger to support our country and a citizenry who supports them.”
U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, introduced Bush and added his appreciation for the veterans.
“I want to thank you all who have sacrificed so much to secure our freedom,” Edwards said.
Edwards also spoke of Bush’s deep love and respect of service men and women, recalling Bush’s visit to an American Legion Post in Waco in 2007 to attend a dinner to honor the families of four soldiers killed in action.
Wordin presented Bush with several presents including a cycling jersey, a T-shirt and a ball cap.
“We’re honored to have you here sir,” Wordin said. “But next time, we want you to join us on the ride.”
After speaking, Bush walked into the crowd to talk, shake hands and pose for photos for about 20 minutes before departing.
The R2R riders left soon after, headed toward Keene and Mansfield before ending their journey at the Ballpark in Arlington to enjoy a ball game.
Before leaving town, Wordin took a moment to reflect on the trip, the first R2R ride to take place in Texas.
“We thought we’d get a good response but didn’t know what to expect,” Wordin said. “It’s been overwhelming. I can guarantee that we’ll be back, no question.
