A 42 tournament benefiting the Krista Findley Memorial Scholarship will be from 6-10 p.m. May 16 in the cafeteria of Cleburne ISD’s Phoenix Center, located on the J.N. Long campus, 425 Granbury.

The $20 entry fee will include a pretournament meal served from 5-6 p.m. Entries must be received by May 9.

The Krista Findley Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Cleburne High School Assistant Principal Krista Findley, who was killed in a car accident on March 6. Her husband, Wayne, is a member of the Phoenix Center faculty.

“Our students and staff are very excited and honored to be a part of the efforts to raise funds for this special scholarship,” said Suzanne Keesee, Phoenix Center principal. “Our students think the world of Mr. Findley, and many of them knew Krista as well. We are hoping this 42 tournament will be something we can host every year to benefit the scholarship founded in her honor. It will continue her legacy as an educator and administrator in providing economic assistance to CHS graduates who plan on continuing their academic studies after high school.”

The grand prize is a gift certificate from Starr Hollow Golf Club in Tolar, donated by Sanders Travel Centre. The certificate includes 18 holes of golf, a cart and lunch for four.

“We have had an amazing response from the community in providing items to be awarded to the winning teams and also for door prizes and a drawing,” Keesee said. “This is really coming together, and everyone who participates is going to have a great time.”

The scholarship, established by members of the White Bluff community, will be awarded annually to a male and female member of the Cleburne High School graduating class, with the first scholarships to be presented this year to members of the CHS Class of 2008. Honorees will be selected based on a “proven record of strong work ethic” and a financial need to fund their continued education either at a college or trade school.

A robust breeze alleviated the heat somewhat Monday morning at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, but also played pandemonium with the setting up of a memorial table for POW and MIA veterans. Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
