KEENE — Keene ISD is the smallest district in the state in area, but it still needs room to grow, the superintendent said Thursday.
Superintendent Kevin Sellers spoke at the Keene Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon about the district’s $15 million bond package, up for election May 10.
The bond package, which would raise taxes 38 cents per $100 of property value to $1.42 if passed, uses two state assistance programs to work, Sellers said.
“Even if this bond passes, these projects will not be constructed until state funding is assured,” Sellers said.
Without the state’s assistance, the district will not have enough money for its planned projects, and they will have to be postponed, Sellers said.
“But I’m very confident that getting those funds is going to happen,” he said.
The projects call for additions and renovations at Keene Elementary School and Keene Junior High School and the demolition of the “white building” serving as Keene Intermediate.
Plans also include changing the traffic flow at Keene Elementary and linking the junior high with Wanda R. Smith High School.
Early voting begins Monday and ends May 6 at Keene Elementary, 401 E. Fourth St.
Chamber members also viewed a presentation from Southwestern Adventist University film student Aaron Weber, who showcased four of eight films screened April 10-12 at the SONscreen Film Festival in Simi Valley, Calif.
“It was absolutely wonderful,” Weber said. “Of the eight that we screened, six of our films actually got nominated in their categories for best work, and one of them took home the best-in-category prize.”
The films included a comedy about student radio, an anti-drug public service announcement and one about the far-reaching work of the United Way of Johnson County.

Officials, residents remember those who gave it all
A robust breeze alleviated the heat somewhat Monday morning at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, but also played pandemonium with the setting up of a memorial table for POW and MIA veterans. Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
