Mom: Son recovering from Florida bike wreck
Man’s back shredded in long slide after crashing motorcycle on highway
An Alvarado man injured in a motorcycle wreck Dec. 13 on U.S. 98 in Florosa, Fla., is improving, his mother said Wednesday.
Rescue workers airlifted Nathan Mitchell Marbut, 21, to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., after his motorcycle skidded 397 feet and shut down traffic for two hours, according to the Northwest Florida Daily News.
“He’s doing very well,” Tammy Marbut said. “He had no broken bones and his organs are OK.”
Doctors kept Nathan Marbut sedated, his mother said, because he sustained substantial injury and scraping away of skin on his back. Nathan Marbut has been responsive, can sit up and can go without use of a ventilator for periods of time, Tammy Marbut said.
“He’s getting better and better,” she said.
Nathan Marbut, who is stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, will return home to Alvarado for rehab and then probably finish his term in the military, his mother said.
Florosa Volunteer Fire Chief Mark Lee said he was traveling in the opposite direction on U.S. 98 when he saw Nathan Marbut pass by, according to the Northwest Florida Daily News. Lee blocked traffic with his vehicle to protect him until rescue workers arrived.
The Florida paper reported that the wreck occurred after Nathan Marbut attempted a stunt that caused his motorcycle to rotate on it’s front tire.
“No, that’s not what happened,” Tammy Marbut said. “A car hit his back tire, and that’s what sent him flying.”
