Abandoned baby given to grandparents

Mother left infant with friend, won’t be charged, police say

A woman who left her baby with a friend Saturday in Cleburne will not face criminal charges, police Sgt. Amy Knoll said.

A friend said the mother dropped the baby off with her and said, “I just can’t handle it anymore,” according to Cleburne Fire Department reports. Cleburne police and fire personnel retrieved the baby from the friend in the 700 block of North Wilhite Street.

Although the 1- to 2-month-old boy had no injuries, a CareFlite ambulance transported him to Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital as a precaution.

The baby was turned over to his grandparents, Knoll said.

The friend told rescue workers that the woman, whom she had not seen since before the child’s birth, had been passing the baby from person to person earlier that day.

The city of Cleburne participates in the Baby Moses program, where parents can leave unwanted children at designated areas, such as firehouses, without fear of prosecution. But this was not a Baby Moses case because emergency personnel retrieved the baby from an individual.
