City council members will revisit the previously proposed 2007-08 budget Tuesday, which includes pay raises for fire and police personnel among other items. The proposed budget died in the Sept. 11 council meeting after a 2-2 tie vote.
Councilmen Bob Force and John Warren voted against the budget because they opposed granting raises to certain groups of employees to the detriment of others. Mayor Ted Reynolds and Councilman Kyle Boles voted in favor of the budget, arguing that such raises are necessary to retain good police officers and firefighters. Councilman Sonny Russell, who was out of town during the Sept. 11 meeting, predicted the budget will pass Tuesday with the proposed raises intact.
“Yes, I’ve been for that since the beginning,” Russell said. “It just costs too much money and time to train people and have them go to another department. We need to get pay close enough so that we’re not just a training ground for other cities.”
The council will also discuss and vote on the creation of a downtown district. The purpose is to create a boundary for the district. Donna Jackson, director of development services, said such a district will benefit economic development, tourism and redevelopment.
The council also hopes to fill vacancies on the city’s planning and zoning commission and zoning board of adjustment.

The Cleburne Yellow Jackets beat Burleson, 62-48, on Friday night at Yellow Jacket Gym to move to 2-7 in District 7-A play. Burleson fell to 2-7 in league play with the loss.

Fallen deputy Clifton Taylor’s sister, Megan Davis, takes a picture of a painting of her brother on Monday during a dedication to the deputy. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office renamed its building to the Clifton Taylor Law Enforcement Center in honor of the deputy who lost his life during a disturbance call in April. The picture was painted by Fort Worth artist Gary Crouch. Three pictures were made and one will hang in the Clifton Taylor Law Enforcement Center. The other two paintings were presented as gifts to Taylor’s parents and his fiancee.
