Times-Review carriers Carolyn and Jim Yoachum are carrying on a program begun last year by fellow carrier for providing blankets and slippers to nursing home patients who sometimes experience discomfort during the cold, winter months.
“This is something we really enjoy doing,” Carolyn Yoachum said. “This year we will be focusing our efforts on the residents of the Cleburne Rehabilitation Center.”
The idea for the program was sparked by hearing about a woman in Fort Worth who also provided blankets and slippers to those in need.
While last year was a milder-than-average winter, many of the people being served by the program benefit in an emotional way by having warm slippers and blankets. Historically, according to the program’s founders, people at the rehabilitation center don’t get many visitors if any at all, so gifts of warmth tend to warm more than their bodies.
The Yoachums are collecting either new or handmade blankets of any size for distribution, and new, warm slippers of all sizes. The goods may be delivered to the front desk at the Times-Review, 108 N. Anglin St., during office hours or they can be dropped off at the Cleburne Rehabilitation Center, 1108 West Kilpatrick St.
CRC director Angela Flores said, “I think it’s so wonderful that people can have such big and generous hearts for people they don’t know at all. We’ll gladly take all the donations we can get.”
