Chamber: Come one, come all to the business expo

The Cleburne Chamber of Commerce is banking on a little change doing the Business and Outdoor Exposition a little good.

New additions, such as a new date and outdoor activities, have officials hoping for an enhanced event when it opens Saturday morning.

“We wanted to enhance Business Expo because it’s been a very well-attended event for the past 12 years,” said Cathy Marchel, chamber president. “We thought what we would do is enhance it by tying it in with some outdoor activities.

“We also feel it will be more community based by having it on a Saturday. We’re hoping it’s going to cover shopping Cleburne first, a little education and fun for the whole family.”

Businesses ranging from banks to car dealerships will set up booths inside and outside of the Cleburne Conference Center for the day.

The event is free to the public. Other activities include bounce houses, face painting, caricatures and more.

Another new addition to the expo this year is a job fair. Businesses that are hiring can display a green light, and those that aren’t hiring will have a red light.

“We thought this would be a great way to let the businesses, if they are hiring people, to bring them out at that point,” Marchel said.

Bands also will provide entertainment throughout the day.

Performers include:

• 10 a.m. — Steve Helms.

• 11 a.m. — JamesHenry Band.

• 1 p.m. — Texas Tradition Chorus.

• 2 p.m. — Scent Sacrifice.

• 3 p.m. — The Vine Band.

• 4-6:30 p.m. — Karaoke.

A silent auction will be held all day, ending at about 6 p.m. Presence at the time of the finale is not required to win.

“We are encouraging the businesses to sell items so it will be a one-stop shot for shop Cleburne first,” Marchel said.

Seminars covering a range of topics will be offered throughout the day. Speakers and topics include:

• 11 a.m. — Social Networking, Monica Faram with the Cleburne Times-Review.

• Noon — Tax Strategies, Lehrmann & Jackson.

• 1 p.m. — Hospice 101, Mission Hospice Chaplain Larry Schneider.

• 2 p.m. — Protecting Your Children, Brian Peterson with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

• 3 p.m. — Resume Writing/Interviews, Dorinda Burdine with the North Central Texas Workforce.

• 4 p.m. — Bed Bugs Are Back! Sherri Leal with Abby’s Termite and Pest Control.

• 5 p.m. — Navigate Your Way to Retirement (a financial planning workshop), Brian Armstrong with Armstrong Purselley Wealth Management Group.

“We encourage any of the businesses in Cleburne to participate,” Marchel said. “It’s a great opportunity to show our community all the great businesses we have in Cleburne and the area.”

Presenting sponsor for the event is Darryl Lackey Sr. Roofing and Remodeling. Gold sponsor is Airmasters Heating and Air Conditioning, and silver sponsors are Community Opportunities, Pinnacle Bank and Texas Health Harris Methodist Cleburne. Bag sponsor is Coldwell Banker Bob King Realty.

Fallen deputy Clifton Taylor’s sister, Megan Davis, takes a picture of a painting of her brother on Monday during a dedication to the deputy. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office renamed its building to the Clifton Taylor Law Enforcement Center in honor of the deputy who lost his life during a disturbance call in April. The picture was painted by Fort Worth artist Gary Crouch. Three pictures were made and one will hang in the Clifton Taylor Law Enforcement Center. The other two paintings were presented as gifts to Taylor’s parents and his fiancee.
