Taking preventive steps to screening for health problems can add years to your life, Dr. Stephanie J. Morton told those attending Tuesday’s Pink Bag Lunch and Women’s Health Forum at the Cleburne Conference Center.
Morton, a family physician in Cleburne, served as the guest speaker at the annual event, hosted by the Friends of Texas Health Cleburne and the Black & White Gala.
“You can save so many years of your life by having preventive screening,” Morton said. “Today I will tell you what screenings you should have and when you should.”
Morton graded screenings based on the necessity of them. Gradings varied depending on past history, age and other factors.
She stressed the importance of flu immunizations.
“Influenza,” Morton said. “This by far is the easiest, least painful thing that we can do to save lives in this country. The next pandemic is expected to have 200 million cases. There are 36,000 unnecessary deaths per year.”
Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne President Blake Kretz welcomed the crowd of women (and a few men) to the lunch, and Mauri Ford, director of Outreach Ministries at First United Methodist Church, gave the invocation.
Black & White Gala Chair Lizzie Dalley gave an overview of the projects funded by the gala, including Shots for Tots, Mammograms are A Must! and Know Your PSA. The free health care programs provide childhood immunizations, mammography and prostate screenings, educational materials and community outreach to men, women and children who would not otherwise receive these services because of lack of insurance or other reasons.
Dalley announced that this year’s proceeds will also be used to purchase a Giraffe OmniBed for the Ann Marti Schmidt Women and Infants’ Services Unit at Texas Health Cleburne.
“The Giraffe OmniBed allows for family-centered care of premature and critically ill infants in a comfortable and controlled thermal environment,” Dalley said.
This year’s Gala is scheduled for Aug. 6 at the Omni Fort Worth Hotel. For information, call Tammy Sims at 817-317-5244 or e-mail her at TammySims@texashealth.org.
