United Way recently granted $3,000 to the Johnson County APPLES program benefiting low-income students with school supplies at the annual Back to School Fair.
Past American Legion Auxiliary Department President Barbara Kundert and Unit 50 ALA President Michelle Bledsoe presented a certificate of appreciation to United Way’s Small Grants committee members Aly Engstrom, Rocky Biggs, Zeb Averhoff and Monty Miller.
“Additional donations of funds or supplies are requested for this vital program” said APPLES spokesman Marty Peters, ALA state vice president and local unit member. “Cash donations may be made at any Pinnacle Bank.”
The Back to School Fair is scheduled for Aug 13. Johnson County families in need of assistance may apply at Salvation Army or Operation Blessing until July 26.
It is anticipated that more 1,000 students will receive assistance this year with the help of community contributions.
APPLE tree boxes have been placed in bank lobbies, businesses and churches throughout the county.
Backpacks for each student were provided by Chesapeake Energy.
