The Abrego family of Whitney missed having a 2012 New Year Day’s baby by half an hour.
Mia Alexandria was born at 12:35 a.m. Monday at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne.
She weighed in at 7 pounds, 4 ounces and measured 19.75 inches long.
It was an early surprise for the hospital, which hadn’t seen the first baby of the year until Jan. 4 or later in recent years.
“They [the hospital staff] were pretty excited,” said Mia’s father, Jonas Abrego. “They were like ‘You might be our New Year’s baby.’”
It was also an early surprise for the Abregos, as mother Sandra’s due date wasn’t until Tuesday. They certainly didn’t expect to have the first baby of the year.
“I started having contractions about 3 o’clock on Sunday,” Sandra said. “I came into the hospital about 6.”
Mia is welcomed home by three siblings, Marissa, 11; Meriya, 5; and Jonas Jr., 5.
The odds of having a baby born on New Year’s are pretty high, even though, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, a baby will be born every eight seconds during the month of January.
The bureau predicted that the U.S. population on New Year’s Day would be 312,780,968.
Celebrities and other influential people who share Mia’s birthday include J. Edgar Hoover (1940), Verne Troyer (1969), J.D. Salinger (1919), Paul Revere (1735) and Betsy Ross (1752).

Officials, residents remember those who gave it all
A robust breeze alleviated the heat somewhat Monday morning at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, but also played pandemonium with the setting up of a memorial table for POW and MIA veterans. Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
