Head Start seeks help to replace stolen, damaged property

DPS warns of dangerous driving conditions during rain

Officials with Cleburne’s Head Start school seek donations to help fund an end-of-school-year party for students.

Someone recently stole jars containing money, collected during the students’ penny fundraiser, which were to be used for the party.

Cleburne police responded at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 to the school, located at 515 Santa Fe St.

Someone gained entry by kicking out two of the building’s windows. In addition to the money jars, they stole an Acer netbook and broke into a vending machine, stealing food and coins. The burglars also discharged a fire extinguisher inside the school.

Anyone wishing to help the school can call 817-645-2717.

Police responded to several more thefts and burglaries in recent days.

Police at 10:45 a.m. Friday responded to a theft in the 300 block of Mansfield Road. Someone stole the tailgate from a 2000 Ford F-350. Reports list the tailgate as having a tan Rhino lining on the inside.

At 1:26 p.m. the same day, police responded to the 1100 block of North Brazos Avenue on a vandalism and burglary call. Someone broke five windows of a house and stole a water heater.

Police responded to a business at 2:40 p.m. the same day in the 1900 block of North Main Street. Someone stole six aluminum car wheels from the premises.

Police responded at 5:48 p.m. the same day to a convenience store in the 2200 block of North Main Street. Two men entered the store, picked out several items and fled without paying, according to reports. An employee chased one of the men and recovered some of the items. The men managed to make off with an Airsoft gun valued at $24.95.

Police, at 11:55 a.m. Monday, responded to an apartment in the 1300 block of Joslin Street. Someone broke in and stole a 42-inch JVC LCD TV and a black cellphone of unknown make.

At 5:58 p.m. the same day, police responded to the Goodwill Industries Store on West Henderson Street. Someone stole a wood entertainment center and two boxes, contents unknown, from a storage trailer on site.

Police responded to a vehicle burglary at 12:03 p.m. Thursday in the 200 block of Complete Court. Someone broke into a 2011 Ford F-150. They stole $72, prescription medicine and a Kershaw folding knife with a blade about five inches long. The word Pumpco is printed on the blade.

Turn around, don’t drown

With heavy rains moving through portions of Texas this week, the Texas Department of Public Safety is urging drivers to avoid low-water crossings and flooded roadways. Drivers experiencing such situations should turn around and find an alternate route. DPS officials remind motorists of these important facts:

zx Six inches of water can cause tires to lose traction and begin to slide.

zx Twelve inches can float many car. Two feet of rushing water will carry off pickups, SUVs and most other vehicles.

zx Water across roads may hide a missing segment of roadbed or a missing bridge.

zx In flash floods, waters rise so rapidly they may be far deeper by the time motorists make it halfway across and trap them in their vehicle.

zx Flash floods are especially treacherous at night when it is difficult to see how deep waters may be, or how fast water is rising.

zx Floodwater weakens roadbeds. Drivers should proceed cautiously after waters have receded as roads may collapse under the weight of the vehicle.

A robust breeze alleviated the heat somewhat Monday morning at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, but also played pandemonium with the setting up of a memorial table for POW and MIA veterans. Wind tipped a vase holding a single rose shattering it on the pavement. A hastily retrieved replacement held out but at one point toppled causing water to spill inches shy of the public announcement speaker.
